THESE JUST IN FROM COLOMBIA.ANY IDEAS??

Post by eczs-1 »

We got in a group of cats shipped in as tiger shovelnose.
Not in this world are these tigers. These are 5-6" long.
These came direct from Colombia and are not Asian hybrids. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

My knee-jerk reaction is that it looks like a hybrid between Pseudoplatystoma x Leiarus marmoratus. I don't know if there's a species that looks like this.

Yeah, unfortunately these did come directly from Colombia and I have the documents to prove it.Don't see how you could have hybrids like this in the wild.Never saw a TSN x RTC until they produced them in Asia and I am sure that is not done naturally.

No, it's done by hormone injections and stripping the fish of roe/milt, and hand-mixing. Most of the fish die from the experience, but it's a good way to make fast-growing fishes (and they may not reproduce in the pond when they are farmed for human consumption - no breeding -> more energy spent on growing bigger).

The State of Washington has been stocking triploid Rainbow Trout because they do not breed and all the energy may be used for rapid growth to larger sizes. Normal Rainbows stocked in Lakes without inlet/out streams cannot release their eggs and most die.
There are hundreds of such so-called seep lakes in the state which are extremely fertile and cold enough to be good trout habitat.

And why should they not "breed" hybrids in south america? They do as foodfish, so they may come from breeders in Colombia and is not WC.

Yes, spawning of pims for food fish happens in South America as well as well as many other places (in fact in the case of pims it started there).
These are not wild caught.
