i just bought a perruno cat and all the thing does is hide ive had it fro 3 days now and i havent seen it eat i had a jack Dempsey in there but he was messing with the cat so i took him out

These are predatory cats, they may only eat food that swims - check with where you got it from to see what they used to feed it.

Also, three days is a very short time to wait for the fish to eat, particularly if it's more than a few inches long - similar to Lions and other predators, these fish will not eat every day - not even every few days. Once they get fairly large somewhere at 10"+, they probably will only need a good feed once a week or so, and no feeding in between. Eventually, it may not even eat that often, when it comes to 15-20" size. This isn't going to happen overnight, of course, you have a few years until it will be really big. From what I understand, they are fairly sensitive to poor tank conditions, so you need good filtration and a large tank to allow the sudden discharges of ammonia that large fishes can produce. [They basically "keep" the fish-equivalent of "wee" in their body, and then release an amount in a sudden burst - this can cause ammonia spikes if the tank/filter isn't up to the task].

And I'm 100% sure that it's not a true Perruno, but a

Leiarius marmoratus

(or possibly

Leiarius pictus

ok ill post a pic in a few but hes in a 150 gallon tank and the filtration is an emperor 400 and an emperor 280 i think it looks just like emperor 400 just with 1 cartridge

Perrunichthys perruno

only "has 8 (1 hard and 7 soft) dorsal fin rays".

Identification : Often confused with Leiarius marmoratus which is much more commonly encountered by aquarists. The fishes are identical in terms of colouration although P. perruno has 8 (1 hard and 7 soft) dorsal fin rays, Leiarius has 10 or 11.

Ouch, my eyes - that gravel is nearly as bright as in my 5-year olds tank...

I suspect you'll find that it's not a P. perruno, but a Leiarius [the photo isn't quite clear enough to count it's rays, but I'd say it's more than 1 hard + 7 soft just looking at the shape of it]- very nice fish all the same, as long as you have the space to look after it.

Over the years I've been on this site, I've failed to find a true Perruno - I'd like us to have at least ONE photo of one... One of the first threads I got involved with was a "Can you get a photo of your perruno, as there isn't one in the Cat-eLog" - only to find that it wasn't one... And every post about one, I've tried to see if we can get one - but now I'm more pessimistic about the chances...

[/color]so is there ne thing i need to be worried about him always hidin and if he not perreno he trhe next best thing but was all worried about him hidin and never comin out so i guess ill let him be cause everyday since i got him i move the castle to make sure he still alive but thats for helpin me with the id even tho the pictures u guys r showing me looks nothin like my fish but o well and whats the best way to put a pic what do i need to resize it to

If you want pictures in your post, it's best to resize to 800 pixels on the longest side - we need a detail of the dorsal (back fin).

yea well the darn jack dempsey i had in there took a snip at it so u want another picture ill get him out 1 more time today and when i bought it at pet store it had like ashura cat on the tank but got home looked it up and the only thing i see close to mine is the perreno but yall are sayin otherwise im not arguing the fact that yall sayin that but the pics ive seen that someone replied those aint look like me they were light colored and mine is dark colored but all u need is a shot of the dorsal fin or what lefy its split in 2 now thanks to good ol jack off

"Ashara" by any chance - it is one of the names for Leiarius marmoratus - here is a link to the list of common names in Fishbase.

Also,

Perrunichthys perruno

is from a region of Venezuela that is NOT fished for ornamental trade - I only just realized this when I went to look at it again. It's from the Lake Maracaibo region, and there simply is no fish from this region that appear in the trade. [Oh, and I don't want some pedant pointing out that half a dozen fish has been exported by one individual over the past 5 years - or some such...]

Hi az4life09,

Your fish does look quite a bit like this picture:


Sometimes the colouring of fish is slightly different depending on conditions and how old it is AND the lighting of the tank etc when the picture is taken. It would be better for you if it was this fish because there's almost nothing known about the P.perruno. Good luck getting a good picture of the dorsal fin, will be neat to see which fish this is.

Which fish do you have listed as the Green Terror? There's some pretty nasty fish out there with that name!

Green Terror is Adinoacara sp Goldsaum, usually sold as Aequidens rivulatus.

I've just added some pictures of a museum specimen of P. perruno, it's not quite the same as a live one, and we already have a couple of drawings as well - but it shows a real P. perruno.
