Hi all.
Can someone explain the major difference between the following two species
Hemibagrus Nemurus
Hemibagrus Wyckioides.
I have seen a few in shops over the years nearly always ID'd as Asian Redtail Cat.
Are they 2 distinct species or one in the same ?
Are you able to tell the difference in small specimens say under 12 Inches ???
I have had the good fortune to keep a Nemurus in the past & also Filamentus (which VERY similar also) but recently stumbled across an Unknown beauty that I think is Wyckiodes as it has much brighter red fins than what Ive previusly owned.
I've looked at the pictures on The Cat e -log & the Nemurs pictures look virtually identcial to what I kept as Filamentus although mine had a yellow tinge to its tail & extensions to its dorsal & Caudral fins ???
Confused!!
Hemibagrus difference?

Re: Hemibagrus difference?
Hemibagrus nemurus has a shorter adipose fin and never has red fins.
In very young juveniles (2–3"), the barbels on H. wyckioides are very pale (typically white) and stand out in stark contrast with the fish.

Re: Hemibagrus difference?
Many thanks Silurus.
Basically then any Hemibarus sold as Asian Redtail provided it actualy has some red colour to the tail would be Wyckioides and Not Nemerus.

Re: Hemibagrus difference?
This seems to be what i have seen - the only exception is fish labelled "albino asian red tail cats" - i've not looked closely but i thought these albinos were nemerus...Redtailrob wrote:Many thanks Silurus.

Wyckioides also has been seen to have tails that exhibit no red at all, yellowish, brown, olive, but no discerable red (although small ones do exhibit the very pale, white-ish barbels)
