(or blochii group), or , if you want a lone fish from the pim family - neither should be too hard to find

, or are heptapteriids that are seen every once in a while &are worth considering

There are some P. ornatus at Pier Aquatics - about 3-4" long. Didn't make note of the price.

I don't think I've seen many in the nearly 6 years I've been a member here. I have seen them at Maidenhead Aquatics in St. Albans, and perhaps Wildwoods. But they are not particularly common. And Pier is a place well worth a visit!

I take it from your comments that you haven't got a car? It's a long ride on the train, but you can get from Norwich to Wigan (and Pier is a very short walk from Wigan station). It takes about 5 hours, so you probably want to set off before 10AM.

However, Nationalrail says the price is about £96 for a return trip - you can probably rent a car for a lot less (assuming you have a driving license, of course). It's not saving an awful lot of time, as it's about 240 miles each way - google maps say just over 4 hours one way. But if you have car with good fuel economy, you wouldn't need much more than £30 worth of fuel.

I did 214 miles from Lymm services (about 38 miles from Derwen where the CSG auction was held). It is long drive to do both ways in a day, but it can be done.

Neither P. ornatus are common in our area - upstate and central NY state. In any of my scouting ventures out to North Carolina and Connecticut I have not seen one either. I'd love to get one. If they are rare in UK, then it is two places it is rare at.

If you do not drive, cannot you catch a bus or a train or ask a real good buddy?

I don't really fancy a 5 hour train journey if im honest. Im only 15 so no drivers licence. My mum doesn't drive all my family (over 18) drive but there's no chance I could talk them into that far for a fish. Thanks anyway though.

Im sure i could talk someone into it if it was just an hour journey but 5 hours i don't think there much of a chance of that happening.

From kid's little rules of life: if you need anything expensive, do not ask your parents, ask your grandparents... An early Christmas and a birthday present combined? Just kidding. Hope things will work out one way or another - do not worry.

Haha. If anything there less likely to take me than my mum. Ill have a look around and see if my LFSs can order them in or if not ill have to find something else maybe a bit more common.
Cheers

Can't you convince the rest of your family to go to Alton Towers or some such? It's not that far off at that point...

Alternatively, there are three shops on http://www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk (TFF)- WaterZoo in Peterborough is the nearest - it's still nearly two hours away (approx 80 miles), but it's perhaps less of problem than Wigan.

TFF also has both Wildwoods and Wholesale Tropicals listing them as "Fish to you" options - this means that they will ship the fish to you - it'll cost a bit extra, but may be easier to achieve than getting someone to drive a long distance.

Edit: Neil and Pier will also ship if you really want him to. Maybe you can send Sojapat (Neil's user here on Planet Catfish) a PM and ask how much to ship a few P. ornatus to you?

Although not common, i've seen them in at least half a dozen retailers in the past year (including a real big one). prices do vary though, so be aware.

Next PC day out - if we give enough notice - there is always a possibility of meeting up somewhere to catch a lift (also depends where we go) - keep an eye on the speak easy forum...i feel a pre-Christmas outing coming on.....?

Like in another thread on the subject of "what fish should I buy", it may be better if you work out what you can get hold of FIRST, then discuss what the possible combinations are, rather than coming up with one or another possible solution that you can't get hold of.

Jaguar cats and false jags are available in some shops, but by no means in every shop.

Fair enough. I just thought it might be best to get a few ideas on what fish would work then go see if i can get any of them.

Mats makes a good (& logical) point.
A lot depends on personal finance too as Jags are not cheap - that said, one would probably be great in your tank but would rarely be seen as they are very light shy & often take a good while to fully settle

I dont mind not seeing it to much i just think they look great. The tank will be fairly dim lit and the back and sides have been painted so wont let as much light in. Aslong as i see it every now and again i dont mind to much. I know it will vary a lot on area and shop but whats the average price for them?

I've seen Jags for about 60 quid, and I've seen them for about 20 quid - both of them , where false jags, are usually a bit less money - £15-25.

To me, Liosomadoras oncinus are breathtaking beautiful. I've got two about 6" TL each but thick - they were trade-ins in a LFS. $50 each (Western NY state). They never come out of their hideouts during the day even in the dim basement light. Never! Have no clue still if they ever come out at night - never caught them doing so in ~0.8 year! Eventually, I had to move their hideouts by leaning the flat rocks against the front glass to see them. They hide under them. Also, they never come out to feed! I mean NEVER! They went for 3-4 months not coming out to feedings. So, now I have to use tweezers and drop the food in their hideouts or near the entrance and then they happily snatch it.

Well i cant get the jags or ornatus locally. The ornatus are in wildwoods for £30 at 6cm and £15 postage but i dont really fancy risking postage when they cost that much. Any other ideas?
