Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?

Well, in that case: A friend is visiting Zoo Zajac tomorrow and I am about to ask him to look for possible remaining Tatia concolor. A wise idea or not?

They should be in the Angelfish/scalare rack. Left side tank at eye level. Tank has a name tag which says "Tatia aulopygia". They were hiding in an artificial piece of wood. Two males, one female.
And if you decide to take them (do so!!), pls quarantine for a while. Good luck!

usually I'm not for preventive beds; because massive overkill on preventive meds by the wholesalers and LFS is what has gotten us in the whole mess
but in this case; I'd say: use protazol.

if you don't want to do that, it's better if you don't buy these fish at all.

Wouldn't also UV filtration for a week and then off for a week work in quarantine without the meds?

Marc does not; I only installed one on my showtank after/during the mass death of my Tanganyikan hobby.

I used it, but it didn't help much with the ich outbreak last winter.
you can't filter all the water through it; it always mixes with parasite-infected water in the tank.

when enough fishes are infected the mass swarms of ich larvae in the tank are diminished but not eradicated by it.

it's a good solution to help prevent diseases; but once a disease explodes in a tank UV is too little, too late.

I do not own a UV setup either, Lex. But I do have 3 Centromochlus concolor atm!
Literally jumped in the air when the bag with the 2 males and 1 female was handled over.

They look healthy. Even after having a very close look I cannot find any spots what so ever.

They indeed shared a tank with Angelfish and characins at Zoo Zajacs, but according to my aquariummate (who really knows where to look), all the tankmates looked fine.

However; I am taking no riks at all: They are in a small quarantinetank for the time being.I rinsed the net and bucket I used with boiling water and about 1/2 kilo of NaCl. Just to be sure...Now I worry about washing my hands...

I'll wait a couple of weeks with joining them with other fish.

Now I am going to take some pictures and have a closer look at the Cat e-log to find out what species this can be.

I may not have UV, but I do have some good news: it seems things are returning to normal in the medium tank. I just fed and the catfishes I saw were doing fine. All spots have vanished, even from the ultimate disease-magnets Auchenipterus nigripinnis. That's one auchenipterid I wouldn't recommend to anyone.... I will have a look at T. taeniatus later on after lights out.
Will keep monitoring of course; don't want to be "surprised" again.
One a side note: the Markiana nigripinnis (not related) are growing quickly all of a sudden. They are lovely characins.

Good thing (see above). Make sure you put a lid on it to prevent them from jumping out.

Thanks Marc. You're always welcome. Somehow it feels a bit strange: You wanting these fish as well, yours are dead and here I am screaming out loud how glad I am with this new asset.

I am putting them in a larger Q-aquarium at the moment. Took some pictures, but they are lousy. I am going to ask a friend with a) the right camera and b) the skills to make some decent pictures.

I don't have Protazol in tha house right now, but might pay a visit to the LFS tomorrow. It is pretty strong stuff. The fish look fine as I mentioned before. Is it possible they carry ich-flagelates without noticing? If they are fine I am not going to put any meds in the tank.

That doesn't mean I can't be happy for someone else. Moreover, the fact that you bought them will at least give me an opportunity to see them again. And I think they've found a very good home!

I'm no fan of preventive medication either (nor of Q-tanks) but you saw what happened....

Thanks Richard, and yes, they seem okay too. The "former" Glanidium leopardum (now Tatia dunni) is fine as well. The only species I can't check are those elusive Auchenipterinae sp. Guyana, which are still very reluctant to leave their piece of wood. May be a good sign though.

Fwiw: although my first thoughts were to replace all (as far as possible) small tank species, I've now decided it may be better to divide the medium tank species over the two tanks. In due course, of course.

So far I didn't notice anything strange in the large tank - hope it stays that way.

As I'm not really renowned for my common sense, I think it's going to be scenario 1.
Advantages:
- the fishes will have more room
- I will be forced NOT to visit any LFS for quite some time and - although it will be tough - I will sustain.

in one of them -a rockbar wich played loads of 70-80's rock- I was steadily drowning myself in large beers* and at one point asked the bartender when he would close the bar.

it was past 5.30 in the morning.......


*Germans believe in quantity. the Irish and British have pints wich already is much much better than the teeny sissy glasses full of foam they sell here.

that's why a good beerstein or a German beermug has a handle......

By the looks of them they seem an old pair and indeed the female could do with some food. Is she in a tank with a lot of food competition?

I think I can now safely assume that the medium tank is safe. No more victims since October 4, no more spots whatsoever, fishes eating, hiding and apparently quite happy, which allows me to close this rather black chapter of my fish keeping career. Thanks everybody for the tips and support!
