I agree completely with you as the same dealers had sold red frontosa's to aqua home which are also hybrids.
i'll be perfectly honest with you i was completely unware and can't really blame the shop as after reading up after making this post the taxonomy was labeled wrong and is often done with catfish from lake tanganyika for people just to make a quick buck also it may could of been a simple mistake but only they know!

I will not guess as to the linage of the fish.
I do not like the hybrides, because the do not act the same as either of the species being used. The chances of them spawning is just about zero. So must of my opinions.
I would think that a pile of logs would be more to there liking, than caves. I know that my syno. multipunctata likes a brush pile the best.
I have used Aulonacara to spawn my multipuncatata with.

you'll never believe it i called in the lfs where i bought my synodontis hybrids from which i believed to be multipunctata, and they are now labeled as petricola! how wrong is this!
