Largest recorded orinocodoras eigenmanni? Mine is over 8" SL

Post by knifegill »

Measured without tail, my eigenmanni is larger than the max size listed in the cat-e-log. What hoops need jumping through to get the new length in? Just a good picture of the cat on a ruler?

Photo with a clearly visible ruler would be OK.

Alright. I'll grab him (her?) during tomorrow's water change and get a few shots. Do I measure from the smallest lateral spike or the end of the muscular tissue in the peduncle?

To the end of the muscle. If you can get a precise measure whilst holding the fish, that would be great.

Had the cat on the ruler and the camera died. I'm not going to stress her out again like that right now, so the photo will be coming next week. *kicks a rock*

Suggestion: Check that camera is fully loaded with fresh batteries and enough free space on the memory card BEFORE getting the fish ready... But yes, I've been there, done that too!

The sad thing is, they were fresh batteries. Except that they were from a battery charger that had been left unplugged for a few hours. Apparently, that drained them. I figured they would still be holding charge enough for a few shots, but no.

lithium

lithium is the way to go with camera's, believe me.

skip the rechargable batteries!
I missed out on Stonehenge because of exactly that.
they're all well and good for flash lights, a tiny radio, holiday clocks and whatever; but digital camera's are juice-hogs

especially when it's a camera with moving parts; like the smaller cameras that electronically telescope out when you start them.
you can suck all the juice out of a fully recharged battery by just a few 'telescope actions'.

I switched to lithium and my little camera's now up and running for 2 months on the first set!
hundreds and hundreds of pix taken, tried, fumbled, flashed, anything; the little lights still say "battery full"

get one of those tiny USB card readers

those work without extra software.

connecting camera's to the PC often runs foul of bad software full of bugs or drivers that don't work.

but USB card readers are simple thingies that don't require any installation and usually they can be used for at least 4 or more different types of cards

they show up in the "my computer" map like you just installed a number of tiny harddrives.
very easy to use.

they come in a large variety, here's 1 example:
Image

mine is like this one; even works without its adaptor:

I'd love one! But I'm in the hole $40 right now.

So I've tried to post pics here before and it never works. But I'll put them up on MFK and hopefully somebody can retrieve them.

Yes, it's terribly depressing that PC is just plain awful about uploading pics. I try about twice a year and typically leave frustrated, wishing I could contribute to this forum but sent away disappointed. I am certain you'd have a more active forum if PC would host pics for itself like so many other forums. I've got tons of catfish pics I'd love to share but it never works so I get bored and spend more time on forums that allow me to share them. Some day I hope I will find this place more inviting as catfish are my favorite type of fish.

Hello Knifegill,
I don't quite understand that this gives you so many problems, but at the same time something should be done about it.
I have to leave it to someone more "technical" to explain properly, but you can upload pictures from your PC and put them into your postings without any difficulty.
I mean, even I can do it. And you can take it me from me: that should say enough.

Btw: to any of those technical persons, would it be wise to do a step by step explanation of the above? The current explanation in the FAQ is probably too vague imho.
I'd do it myself, but my knowledge of the matter itself isn't good enough.

That's a very harsh comment. It is also in other factually incorrect, the forum has been able to host pics for over two years now. Can you explain please? Several here have offered to help, but you have not allowed us to look into it.

I use imageshack for uploading pics. It is really simple.

First you make you a free imageshack-account on http://img974.imageshack.us/registration/

After you have done that you download the imageshack-uploader: http://imageshack.us/content.php?page=uploader

you open your map which the pictures you want to upload, you open the uploader and you drag and drop the pictures in the uploader. Click the upload button and wait. When everything is uploaded you can choose to have the links for every picture separate or you can have them all in one time.

This works a lot faster than uploading the pictures on the forum, especially when you want to post the pictures on different fora, and it doesn't slow down the forum. If I had a forum uploading pic's would not be possible, there are better way's to share pictures.

Sorry for off topic(ish) post. It is probably better to have both. The problem with third party hosting, imageshack, for example, is that pictures may be unavailable in years to come. Look back at posts from 2003 for example and there are lots of now missing images. However, back in 2003, hosting was paid for in terms of disk, so uploading cost me more cash than it does now (CPU and bandwidth are now the costs).

Again, I've got both running now.

On the "attachment vs. external hosting", I agree - when you just have a single picture, or a couple of pictures (that are not meaningful to share with others in other respects), uploading them directly into the post is my preferred method.

The fish measures about 7.5 inches SL IMO, not 8, so I would say 190mm if you are doing SL. Not sure if you want SL or TL?

We do measure standard length. I agree it's barely 8", but I went for somewhere around 7 3/4" - which is 197mm (using mental artihmetic approximation)... I think 200mm is "close enough".

Hi Mats

Actually I've just checked YAAS standards and we have it at 21cm SL anyway. This was based on a fish that CAS club members used to show in the 90's so 200mm is OK anyway.
