Etymology of species name in Dupouyichthys sapito

Post by lfinley58 »

Hi all.

For the Cat-eLog: The following is from the original description of Dupouyichthys sapito [Aspredinidae]:

"Named sapito after the common name of this species in the Maracaibo Basin."

If I'm not mistaken sapito means "frog".

EDIT: Or "small toad".

Hi Mike,

Sapo, as you note in your edit, is the Spanish for toad.....and the -ito suffix would indicate a small toad. Maybe it is called that locally for sounds that the catfish makes(?). But from the point of Etymology I think that the original wording of Leonard Schultz would have to be used. But as you noted the translation, that might also be used for educational purposes. I am unsure how Jools, Mats, et al. treat a situation such as this.
