What's your fish called and why?

Post by FunkyFredFrog »

Besides the obvious names of some of my fish...

Loachy...(Yoyo loach)
Bluey...(dwarf gourami)
Sharky...(red finned shark)
Freckles....(snowball pleco)
Goldie...(sunshine pleco)
Krusty and SideShow Bob (Clown Loach)

I have some funny names for my other fish...

Mo the ghost knife fish....(there was 2 rams, 1 paradise fish and him all bought together. One ram was nipping so we called him meanie! The rest were eanie, minie and mo. Now there's only mo still here!

Plucky the Common Pleco...has survived a very difficult tank transfer plus jumped out of my tank, got mauled by a cat then survived out of water for at least 20 mins if not longer!

Lurch the paradise fish....likes to linger around plants then lurch coward trying to chase my blue dwarf gourami (Bluey!)

What's yours called and got any funny stories?

I am approaching my 50th year as a fish keeper.
I have yet to name one.
I only care which ones die and why.

few of my fish ever had names, but the ones that did stuck.

often it was Marc that tagged a name on a fish or his kids (when they were small), such a name became a label for an entire species, not just an individual......and it even rubbed off on some friends.

for example we collectively now know that a "Nono" means Auchenoglanis occidentalis.

some of my current cichlids have names, but to spare Jools I will not type em.
it's because of their behavior, which can best described as "total and utter pigs when feeding".

since my English is quite abundant in daily talk, I'll just state that for example my huge Paretroplus menarambo's are often named or described in language that wouldn't be amiss from Henry Rollins or Samuel L Jackson
:D

my showtank is now a diabolical crossbreed between Mad Max and the Ren & Stimpy show
the fish have a great time, but they do make a complete mess

and bite me
;)

if anyone knows a brand of fishfood that has Ritalin listen as an ingredient, please let me know.

I enjoy this thread idea when it comes up - everyone needs a chuckle and pet names seem to be a small lens into the soul of the keeper.
:-O OMG, Larry has no soul! I wondered why he seems to be able to breed anything and everything. :))
Kidding, Larry :d

I had Frank the Syno because he turned out to be a hybrid.
Flip, Flop and Fly are my otos. I have many but they get called one of those names when it's relevant.

Pandora and Isis turned out to be the P.maccus 'pair', hope the others are male. At least one.

Baal is one of the new S. Euptera. He's a menace.

Stephen or Steve is the twig with the extra strings on his fins.

Still waiting to see the personality of the others before they get names. The corys get called Three Stooges names on and off depending on what they're doing.

Need a good Voodoo name for the yoyo loach. The way he lays there dead but isn't dead a few minutes later. Gives me the willies.

I do give some fishes a name - dad and mom, when they have fry, and sometimes, these names stick , for instance when the fry survives and remains in the tank. Than the parents are 'the dad' and 'the mom'

But further? nope

My first I called "Big spot" (more for kids than myself). Then I got another two, which were initially called "little spot" and "stripey", because one was significantly smaller and one had a oblong spot, like a stripe.

My 15 year old Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps was imaginatively named 'Plecky' when I was 5. Since then I've named my notable fish like my first L190 'George' but since numbers have amassed I use where or who I bought them from for names.

I used to name them, some names stuck.

Like my common pl*co is Rex short for Tyrannosaurus rex cause he seems to come from the time of the dinosaur to me.

My euptera of course have names as they were some of my first fish. Max, Jack, Cort, Ben and Johnny. (named after Russell Crowe movie characters, do not laugh /:) ) But I can no longer tell them apart, cept for Johnny as he is the youngest.

My bettas I name always, currently I have two, one is East and one is Egan, again RC characters. ;))

My syno angelicus is El Diablo as he has such a reputation, in general, from what I have read, of being a little devil. Mine seems good tho. Unknown what happens after lights off but I do not have any dead or scarred fish so I think he's behaving.

My goldfish are Koby (big sarasa comet girl) Jai (shubunkin male) and Sunny (big shubunkin female) named after the Abberton brothers aka Bra Boys.

None of my other fish have names. Theres way too many corys and otos to name. And the rest of the plecs go by their common names, Tiger, Choccie Zebra, Clown, rubbernose etc.

**edited to correct sex of goldfish***

My two goldfish are called Bill & Ted. They rock. I don't have any others named at present, but I suspect the kids will have other ideas once they can talk.

You were braver than me! My first big L190 is called Russel (Crowe) and my even bigger one is called Maximus (Decimus Meridius, from Gladiator). Why you ask? Because they're beasts!

I give names to fish, wich are real individuals.

First there is Gracie my big bristle nose female (I rescued her, and she reminded me of the wales in Star Trek IV).
Then there ist Lily, a smaller bristle nose female (the name just matched her somehow).
Next there is my L181 bristle nose male, whom I've named Horst (the other two of them don't have names jet).
In addition there are also Ole (L 411 Hypancistrus), Tracy, John, Paul (three Panaqolus). The most names come to me by watching them.

I've also named my snails (but the wohle species and not individuals). The trumpet snails are called Schorsch and the ramshorn snails are all named Armin (this is because a friend hated them so much and in revenge for that I named them after him :d ).

I have heard something similar before but I'm hoping my ethics are sufficient to keep my soul weighing less than a feather when my time comes.
But like Sid, I have given a species a nick name. I call common Bushy noses "Guppyostomus" since they are so easily bred and prolific. My success with fish is easily explained. I have two hobbies which are equally important; keeping tropical fish and fly fishing for trout. I am very good at both because I am able to think like a fish but believe me, that is nothing to brag about.

Cool stories guys. I can understand why people don't name fish. I name them cos my wife likes to associate them with names more than the species.

I recently lost bob my blue phantom pleco though. Poor bob!

Oh, no. Sorry to hear.

I forgot to mention my first catfish, called Algot, which in Swedish is a bit of a pun, because Algae taste "gott" (good, yummy).

And my pair of Ancistrus are called Gus & Warren - Gus being the female. Unfortunately, once the name stuck, it was impossible to rename her to a female.

I'm seriously stealing your brilliant line of thinking for the other two S.euptera!
Max will be the middle size fish and Leo(nidas) will be for the other equally beautiful man, er, fish.

So did you know in advance that Russel Crowe was going to buy the Rabbitohs?

I knew about the Rabbitohs a long time ago, thru Russell Crowe's interest in them, prior to him being co owner. I've been an international member for years. Rugby is so much funner to watch then American football, IMHO. And cricket too!

But we digress....pending thread hijacking :ymblushing:

Entertaining stories all, keep them coming!

I have a pair of bristlenose named Mick and Trish, after a local older pair that argue allot in public.

Also one of my panda cories was named Lazarus after surviving last winters genocide caused by an electricity failue.

On another note, my Opel Corsa 96 was named Beatrice by my sister in law for some reason.
