"new posts" not behaving like before?

Post by MatsP »

In the past, I think "new posts" have listed the posts from the last several hours. It seems like it's now showing "only very resent posts"?

Yes, that link. It used to show something like the last 12-24 hours [I'm guessing] worth of posts, but now it seems to only show posts from the last 10 minutes or so [for example, when I looked a minute ago, it was only the S. obesa post listed].

I could be wrong, but I thought it was new posts since you last visit?

If that's right, then it's been broken until two days or so ago. Or "visit" has started counting differently?

I'm not sure, however, it is showing me new posts and not ones since last visit. I'll need to check the documentation over at phpbb.com

I checked on the "last visit time" on the Board Index page, and it says 06:46 (not sure which timezone that is, since I certainly was still in bed at 06:46 BST, so probably something else), but this is the same time that it showed just after you mentioned the new since last visit, which is roughly an hour ago. [Would I be right in thinking that "last visit" is "when the session variable is created" - if you don't know, then you don't need to look it up, just interested to know].

I just checked it by the following test.

Log in, click new posts, I see 40+ new posts. I read a few.
Log out.
Log in, click new posts, I see none.

This uses the session table (as opposed to PHP's $_SESSION superglobal) and is designed for folks that log in and log out. If you're using the "keep me logged in" function then I don't think it will do what you require of it.

Does that explain it?

It explains how it does work - I always use "Keep me logged in" (don't know if you can see that).

So I've been using "active threads" (whatever the exact wording is), and that seems to work OK for my purposes).

However, "new posts" used to work as I expected it to...

In your UCP / board settings, what's your timezone set to? I am not sure why this has "broken" or if it was actually wrong previously but just isn't not. I can say with some certainty it isn't a bug. It's either a setting I or you have got wrong or a misunderstanding of how it should work.

Well, sort of. I think there is a change in behaviour, but using active topics works, so I'm moving this to resolved.
