Here's a couple of shots of a male Acanthodoras Species. Most likely A. Cataphractus, although I struggle to tell the difference from the cat-elog pics between this species and A. Spinosissimus.

Isn't he pretty! Hope you like...

Nice ! That second shot down could definitely go in the catelog species profile. I am would need some lateral pics to find out which one though!

Nice fish, I'd say he's a beast, particularly if he's the biggest thing in the tank.

You are right Martin. Particularly the bony plate from the head to the dorsal is so well patterned. The other specimen I have is more plain.

Thats a super cool fish. Reminds me of the marbled syno that I have had in a 55 for over five years. Is that an aggressive cat that you feed live foods to?

Looks like cataphractus to me. Easiest way to tell would be with a dorsal shot showing the back end of the fish.

definitely a beauty doridae are the best when they arent sleeping. even then they are still the best.

how active are yours?

my Agamyxis pectinifrons just tunnels deep into the sand and I see him once a month or so...

These are not aggressive at all. I reckon you could safely keep them with any community fish. They may squabble amongst themselves, avoid that by providing plenty of hiding places.

AHH sounds like my smaller p costatus (armalatulus whatever you want to call it) he comes out I found that the hiding places really make a difference in how much you see them I planned a deep sand bed tons of drift wood they can tunnel under and they seem to have almost reverted to their original nature. this compared to when I had them in a more normal set up with caves that still allow for viewing.

I guess I dehumanized my little buddies but I get a kick trying to find them in the tank ive found all of their caves.

I was thinking the other day I need to get the less active ones to eat more do you know of a species of non-parasitic aquatic worm that I could introduce to the tank so that they could find their own food by sifting to the sand? its just a thought.

Hi Nico,

Putting in the tank a live food that will live until the fish find it is in some ways a nice idea, but it also means you are giving up control of when the fish feeds, you won't observe it feeding.
If you never see the fish, what's the point having it in the tank?
I reckon its better to offer foods that it WANTS to eat, so that the fish pretty much show themselves when you put the food in.
Assuming your fish is healthy and happy in the water you provide (this is the key...), it should show itself regularly.
Try stepping-up the water changes.

hahaha, well you have met the only whack who keeps fish for the sake of keeping them

I dont care so much if I dont see them I get a mental image and it makes me super exited.

just imagining them sitting perfectly still in their little caves amuses me.

I think ill look into it its also great cause the geos can fatten up a bit more.

tho it would be nice to see them. but im practically nocturnal myself all i need is dim light and I can watch them when they are awake
