The literature I have seen indicates that they live for about 8 years in the wild. YMMV.

Only 8 years!!! That surprises me.
Usually such big Apex predators have a much longer lifespan.
They are very slow growing for such a short lifespan @ least in the captive environment.

What in the wild or in Captivity?
Please be more specific.

Evidence suggests that Wild fish grow incredible fast, however my tank kept specimens are only 12 &14" respectively after around 15 months. Although I'm sure if i feed them more & more often i could achieve much faster growth rates.
These have the potential to be huge even in home aquaria.

Hi Silurus,

If you don't remember where 8 years # came from, can you give us a point of reference? Say an RTC in the wild, would it still be expected to live for 20-30 years (I mean "ideal" wild conditions, no accidents, good stable health)? Taksan's two 4.5-footers lived for 27 years in his 15,000 gal pond.

Or vs. a TSN, S. glanis, etc.?

I only kept mine alive 12 years (1997 to 2009).

Slow growth and only reached 36".

Wallago leeri affect their lifespan.

Your leerii killed a 3' yarelli? He surely could not swallow it. Did he constantly try to bite pieces out of yarelli?

Both of my leerii attacked the goonch constantly. Yes biting it. My goonch only grew to 3 foot. My leerii are a lot bigger.

Have you seen the videos from arapaimag - his leeri live with plenty of other fish - but he does have them in a BIG tank.

Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!

Sorry for the delay.

Mine took about 6 years to get to 34-36" and then just stayed that size.

I currently feed the 2 big tanks on three days each week.

A combination of Martin's pellets on Sundays

A combination of fish (Mackerel, Herring, Salmon, Trout, Smelt) not all at once whatever I have in my freezers on a given day. This is fed on Tuesdays

A combination of Flakes from Wardley and Tetra on Thursdays.

Of course the large tank has many hundreds of breeding cichlids that provide exercise and food for any hungry fish. The Goonch most often hunted for it's food.
