L- ???

Post by Zulan »

Came across a new pleco today, the seller is a novice regarding plecos so I need some help to ID this. It looks very similar to our L-168 (Dekeyseria brachyura) in shape, some kind of Dekeyseria?

I moved this to "What's my catfish?" where questions on ID goes.

The second picture looks like or - they look the same from above, so can't say which it is.

Third picture I'd say is .

And I almost always say one, and someone else says the other... ;) I don't actually know how to (definitely) tell the difference.

Thank you for your reply MatsP, we have also guessed L-201.
On the other species that you guessed L-340 we are pretty sure they are not L-340 as we have a group of them.

Compare this L340 picture from this site (link) with mine.

In Mergus Wels Atlas they distinguish them by tooth count, but I haven't had the chance to look at L340's teeth that closely.

In our eyes L129 is a possible candidate, that was our guess in the store.

Both L129 and L340 are quite variable, and quite similar. So yes, L129 is a possibility, for sure.

Do you know if they came from Colombia/Peru or Brazil? L270 is from Brazil.

I asked the seller where he got them from. He said he had bought them as L-333 from a wholesaler in Sweden about a year ago.

So doesn't really tell us much - if they wholedsaler could tell you where they came from, it would help - but I'm not sure you'd get far with that.

The eyes on the Rio Orinoco basin fish tend to be more on top of the head, and more on the side of the head with the Rio Amazon fishes.

Thank you Saul,

How sure are you about L129? Would be great to have some certainty.
When I look at some of the pictures on L129 it seems to be the one..

L201 should be correct, we might be lucky on those, they are spawning right now.

I can say they are L129 for sure.
The L270's body pattern and L340's head shape are much different.

I have included some pictures of some L270 for your appreciation.
