Bought as WC L173

Post by keen-eyed »

Hello,

We bought a pair as wild caught L173, the owner have had frys on them and have more breeding adults.
The fishes are supposed to be fully grown.

We doubt that it actually would be L173 by their appearance.

Any thought on this? Does these fishes appearance change when they get older?
We were told that the offspring is really neat.

Hi there.

L400 possibly or maybe a hybrid of L400 and L174 based on the size of their eyes, body pattern.
I would like to see what other people thinks.

what size are they right now?

We had our guess on L174, but I thought it would be best not to point in any direction for a good answer.

They are quite small, around 7-8 cm TL. There are not a lot of juvenile pictures in the Cat-eLog.
Maybe these fish can look a bit like L173 before they are fully grown?

7-8 cm its about 3.1 inches, I will say pretty much adults already.
The pattern is a little off to be L174 but their eyes definitely match its family.

I am sure the rest will agree that we are still trying to identify what an L173 is? or how they look when juveniles etc.
There has been quiet some talk between the Glaser L173b, L173 or even the zebra variants for that matter.

We are still unsure of the real nature of those fantastics creatures.

Yep I have read a bit of the thread about L173b etc.

I saw this on the Cat-eLog regarding L174:
Identification Could be taken for a H. zebra variation. Exhibits stripes on the head like on H. zebra but the rest of the body is covered with black spots, sometimes joined together forming a small wavy line.

Hi,
this is L 174. Very different to L 173. And very rare to the market, because many breeders don't breed L 174. This is the slowest growing Hypancistrus. Small L174 are very beautyfull, adult ones looks sometimes like a grey toothbrush ;-)

This is L 174:

We believe it's L174 we got, some of the pictures in the Cat-eLog are spot on.

The seller told us he got them when they were about 3cm, he believed they were about 2-3 years old now. Maybe at the small size as 3cm it's harder to determine which spices it actually is. They are also captured at the same location as L173 and it's possible they got imported as that or mixed up.

I would say L174 too, they can be quite variable in the pattern and not always spotted. They don't share the same location as L173 and is very rare both in nature as in the hobby, more rare than H. zebra in Xingu.

I haven't seen the diversity of pattern that Janne is talking about but they rare and beautiful in deed.
I've heard some breeders are having trouble raising their fry.

Attached are some pics of adult, sub-adult and juvenile.
