Silurus biwaensis

Post by Stackdeck »

Hi guys , just got a question about Silurus biwaensis , it's not in the cat-e-log so it it a synonym for another sp.? Fishbase states they are endemic to lake Biwa in japan and there's a mounted specimen of 270cm probably TL. Just want to know abit more about it.

It's a valid species. The reason it's not (yet) in the C-log is probably because no-one keeps it and/or there's no picture available.

I think your best shot for more information (besides FB) is Google.

You want to find:
Memoirs of the College of Science, Kyoto University (Ser. B) v. 28 (no. 3, art. 5) form 1961. It's possibly not the easiest paper to find...

Another paper might be useful:
Systematic revision of the catfish genus Silurus, with description of a new species from Thailand and Burma. Jap. J. Ichthyol. 36(2):155-186.

There are 2 photos of adults, 1 of a juvenile, and 1 of two in a mating clinch (all live fish) in that fantastic book of Japanese Freshwater Fishes.

Some text too, if you can read Japanese!
