Mussel filter?

Post by Caol_ila »

Hi!

Its 5:50 am and its 5:5 in the 10th...

I had this idea about a natural filter that might be totally rediculous but anyway here it is.
I read in german forum that a guy had algae problems in his unfiltered outdoor pond (not bigger than 300 liters) and he solved that with pond mussels he put in. What came to my mind if it is possible to run a tank without an electric filter only on plants-mussels? Ive read a lot of posts on a german forum that people run tanks only on powerheads to keep the water moving without filters. All heavily planted tanks which could be considered "understocked" if that exists.
I had a mekong mussel once and it died after about 2 months, i guess it starved or was too old anyway.
Your opinions would be interesting...
Dave Ortiz almost hit one out...go sox
cheers

These are seen all over the place in SW tanks in the form of a refugium. This is simply a tank plumbed to the main tank .They usually plant they heavily with macroalgae, but I think the FW equivolent would be a refugim planted heavily with anacharis. All you do is take some of the plants out every once and a while and you are performing "nutriet export" which takes all the algae food out of the water. Another nice bonus is that you can easily add 10-20 gallons of water mass to your system with one.
