Wich Catfish in a Pond

Post by Phyllonemus »

I have the idea to make a pond and put there some suitable catfishes in.
I live in The Netherlands and outside temps ( not the water temp.)are between -5 and 30 degrees celcius.
I don't know the size of the pond yet, but I was thinking of Bullheads/Madtoms.

Wich species ( not to big) are suitable ?
Or maybe different species can be combined ?

You also need to consider if they are actually LEGAL to keep in your country, as if they can survive in a pond, they can probably survive in a river or lake around the same area, and may cause problems by out-competing native species.

As far as I know, we (NL) don't have any law against keeping potentially feral species. We do have a law against letteing them escape, but nobody is blamed for accidents.

Regarding the catfish, I think almost any (cat)fish from the USA or Canada could survive here, in the USA they sometimes have snowdrifts very far to the south. Florida. Might be the only exception.

Personally, I would make certain escape is almost impossible. Almost, as a herring (=reiger in Dutch) could catch a fish, fly away with it and make a stupid mistake. But further? Further escape routes should be cut of

What's not too big? Under foot? Under 2 feet?
