Most likely it would be a specific injury or erosion against rough surfaces and poor water condition.

If you can keep the nitrate under control, it will help. It would also be best if the substrate is sand rather than gravel.
Edit: If I read your subject title literally, I'd tell you to go to the "pet gym and get another workout set" - the spelling for the bits growing out of a cory or other catfish is "barbel". "barbell" is a lump of metal used for weight-training in a gym.
