"My Aquaria" Feature Requests

Post by MatsP »

My current "laundry-list":
1. Would it be possible to link to a foreign image (e.g. my http://www.dphoto.us already posted image), instead of uploading it?
2. I echo Racoll's request for non-catfish species. [Don't know how you would actually implement it, but I want to at least let you know I'd like it].
3. Would it be possible to have a different way to select species to go in each tank - to me it's a bit bass-ackward to select the tank from the species - I'd prefer to select the species into the tank [having a drop-down with all listed species].
4. Selecting the same species for multiple tanks - as of current, I'd have to sign up as owner multiple times. It seems more sensible to have the same species allows in multiple tanks [for example, I have A. sp(3) in all but 2 of my tanks - not counting the one with no fish at all that I just filled at 10pm yesterday].

Basically, no but I understand why your are asking the question. Well, when I say no, of course it is possible and quite easy to do but it really will result in lots of broken links in time. Not to mention many sites don't like or allow hot-linking. It seems like a backward step to me.

Oh, and I also have plans to show small images of tanks and I can't do "on-the-fly" image resizing (or build animations or slides shows) when images are not held within the site.

It's designed to work the way it does for a reason. My cats is meant to record populations. So, if you have an odd in several tanks, you should have several my cats entries for the one species. This is because they could be bought at different times, or perhaps one is a breeding group and the other a solitary male, or perhaps offspring. The key point is that my aquaria then builds up data and who is keeping what with what, in terms of in what types of tanks, with what types of other catfish and in what quantities. You can then see that parameter searches such as "show me what other species are being kept with this species (perhaps even refine it to be for more than 6 months)" or "show me what cats are kept in 900l or larger tanks" become possible.

Noted. I had also thought of recording plants and possibly even inverts.

5. Record substrate, filtration, heating, temp, ph, other water and decor and lighting. :-)

Understood - I don't always see the bigger picture. [Also fixed typo in CLOG tags on your orignal post].

I love trying to get the bigger picture across, but I don't tend to do it unless someone prods me to. It's not a power trip or anything it's just (a) I don't know that it actually gets read/digested and (b) I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. "My Aquaria" has been in my head for the past 5 years!

Sure - that's fine. And how about that, the realization of a 5-year old project - I hadn't even joined planet catfish 5 years ago!

Now, perhaps I should go find that picture of my RIO 400.

Mmmm, well, I think that's probably a first time around / data population thing. I mean a tank must come first right? So you create a my aquaria page first. You add some fish and maybe a catfish, so in goes the first my cats entry. Now, the way I've designed it you can add that cat straight to a tank at the same point you create it. The other way you suggest, you'd have to then go to the my aquaria page after adding the my cats record and add it in there.

I think it seems a bit "bass-ackward" because you're doing so many retrospectively right now.

i was looking through some of the aquaria already posted by members, and some are so handsome, nice looking. so i thought, wouldn't it be nice if you can leave a little message under a tank you like?
Greetings, Tim

I'm pretty sure everything suggested here has either been rejected or implemented. I'm moving to Resolved. Comment if anyone wants it moved back (and explain why!)
