size of Auchenoglanis wittei

Post by sidguppy »

this species gets definitely larger than the size given in the catelog

the first picture is made by me, in Marc's tank

however; this very individual stayed in his tank, after that in mine and after that in Gijs Knoop's tank....
by the time it outgrew his 1300L tank it had a TL of at least 55 centimeters........

I'll check if we got pictures of him at that size or near that size.

but 25 cm SL sure is too small, it can be doubled at least
;)

Hi all,

Going along in agreement with sidguppy I will note that H. Matthes (in "Les poissons du Lac Tumba et de la region D'Ikela", 1964) lists the largest specimen of this species that he collected to be 470 mm (18.5 inches) standard length. Adding on the caudal fin would take it pretty close to the total length provided.

Should mention that in this publication it was called Auchenoglanis occidentalis but I think it is assumed that those fish collected would have been Auchenoglanis wittei considering the distribution.

Moved to resolved.
