Netty Common Names
Now, goodness knows I can be a bit of a stickler for our good old English language at times, but I wanted to at least ask the question if we think that common names should be expanded to take into account commonly used acronyms.
TSN and RTC would be two starters. I also think CDB (Common Domestic Bristlenose) feels good! Poll started, join in! I like the idea of being able to use them in clog tags.

Re: Netty Common Names
Take in cosideration, that there might be some users that just dont know what it means. I consider my selves fairly good in the English language,(even if the spelling is not all that good always) but I dont know what TSN and RTC stands for, and I`m sure you got more.
Best Regards Birger

Re: Netty Common Names
That is one of my main reasons for bringing this up. The term TSN for example (Tiger ShovelNose) is commonly used but a visitor to this site would not know what it was. If it is made a common name, then it can be searched for and would appear like an L-number in posts (e.g. but TSN).

Re: Netty Common Names
The only one I already know is RTC but I don't know what the word netty means?
I guess you would have all the info wrt what people are looking for in the search and if many people look up RTC etc, then it would make sense to include it. Maybe I would like it more if it was the short-form for the proper names.

Racing, shoes and fish. Nothing else matters. Oh, and bacon.
Re: Netty Common Names
From my point common names cause problems
Bulldog / Pitbull both I have seen used for 4 or 5 typs of fish.
To use ab,s like TRC and TSN could cause the same problem for me.
I stick with eith the genus and Sp or the full described name.

Re: Netty Common Names
I agree mostly, but, I mean, is oft used for 4 or 5 species too. While common names can be applied to anything, they can be misapplied too. Anyway, "incorrectness" will happen not matter what and anyway the site already handles common names, or for example.macvsog23 wrote:From my point common names cause problems

Re: Netty Common Names
While this is how many of the regulars view this, someone coming to this site for information may have only heard the term TSN in many of the other sites out there and if they come looking for it would be good for them to find that it is a Pseudoplatystoma tigrinum that grows to a good size...macvsog23 wrote:From my point common names cause problems

I do not remember seeing CDB ever but ABN(albino bristlenose) is quite popular.

Re: Netty Common Names
Dave!
I've not seen you post for ages - good to hear from you!
Anyway, another thought occured to me, yeah, CDB (or ABN) doesn't exist but isn't it cool we got one for that and not for BDP (Big Dumb Pleco = Pterygoplichthys)? That's shorthand for saying we could get across the "uncoolness" of some very common species if a few of these things caught on. I don't want lots...

Call me a grumpy old man, but I quite like the old skool way of textually representing emotions **grins**.
Anyway, smilies fixed, back to acronyms.

Voted.
Yes, why not have acronyms as common names. They're not going to go away, so we may as well make them easier for people to understand.

Re: Netty Common Names
Seems like we should add these:
ABN (& CDB?) to
TSN to
RTC to
I will add these later on today...
Any more?

Re: Netty Common Names
I don't see much use of CDB and I dislike strongly the use of the term of domesticus - its how a nomen nudum starts. So avoid.
TSN is already there.
RTC OK.

So TSN is only used for the P. fasciatum, not P. tigrinum (also called Tiger Shovelnose Catfish in the common names table)?
ABN is there already.

Re: Netty Common Names
I guess we could come up with some sort of "it gets used a few times and thus gets added" type of pseudo rule?
