update FAQ easy to keep catfish

Post by Richard B »

Quote from FAQ
"Q: What would be a good catfish for beginners?

A: There are many different forms of catfish, and this list is just a brief list of some of the more commonly kept and easy to keep species.

For tanks that are less than 100cm/200 liter (40"/50 gal):
Captive bred bristlenoses Ancistrus sp(3) and Ancistrus sp(L144)
Corydoras spp
Panaque maccus

For a bigger tank, the choice is wider:
Captive bred Sturisoma festivum
Common plecs (Pterygoplichthys pardalis, Sailfin-plec P. gibbiceps and P. joselimaianus)
Riverine Synodontis like S. nigrita, S. eupterus, S. ocellifer and S. robbianus.
Captive bred Rift lake Synodontis, e.g. S. lucipinnis and any variety of captive-bred S. multipunctatus.

Note: Synodontis species are well adapted to be kept together with many cichlid species, which is more than can be said for most other catfish species.

Dianema spp. and Brochis spp. These are like "larger Corydoras".
Megalechis thoracata, Hoplosternum spp.
Mystus tengara, Pseudomystus siamensis, Pimelodus pictus, Agamyxis pectinifrons, Amblydoras hancockii and Platydoras costatus."

A couple of suggestions - should P.Costatus be changed to P Armatulus?

Should we point out that P.Pictus need to be kept in a group (much more than some other species listed)

Should we suggest the Pterygoplichthys species need really big tanks rather than the bigger than 100cm/200 liter (40"/50 gal) we stated
Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way.
Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!

while you're at it, please change Ancistrus sp. 3 to Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus and Amblydoras hancockii to Platydoras hancockii.

Except I haven't got the login information for that - I thought it was my own user-name/password, but it doesn't seem to work - Jools, can you send me an update to my home-email?

No mention of Amblydoras hancocki, but it does mention the A. nauticus. Which appears to be the current name.
