Question about Admin page

Post by Marc van Arc »

Species search -> undescribed and no synonyms gives a list of 600+ species.
For some reason that list doesn't show , whereas sp.1, 2 & 4 are shown.
Any idea why this could be?

I will have a little "play". I can confirm that when I do it, I get the same result. I'm just not sure if there's some sort of "remnant" of a different (removed) species, or some such that causes problems.

Re: Question about Admin page

Ah, I think the value in the "original genus" field was wrong - it should be 'y', 'n' or '-', but it appears to have been either space or "nothing".

I'll see if I can change the search code to match "anything not 'y' or 'n' is undescribed" (which is what I thought it did already...)

Edit: I discovered this by editing the species and seeing that the "original genus" data had changed, despite me not editing it. It could be that "add new species" should set it to '-', where it is leaving it blank now...

R541 contains an updated species search that should fix this problem.

IIRC,

null/space = default.
- means not described (e.g. l-number).
Y and N are obvious?

Re: Question about Admin page

To my mind, a fish is either described or not. Whether it is L-number (or C, CW, LDA, LG, etc) or otherwise shouldn't really matter. Either way, the new code checks if it's described or not by this:
if original descr = ('y' or 'n') then described. Anything else is "not described". So whether is '-', blank, question mark, empty, or any other value besided 'y' or 'n', it's considered 'not described'.

The data submission page changes anything not 'y' or 'n' to '-' when you submit it.

Yes, so in my rather old school programming logic. Null tells you it's not been looked at and - tells you it's not described. Y or N then tells you if it's still in the genus it was described with.

Moot point though, I think, adding the code now.

Technically, I think we need Marc's OK to close this, but I now get another 140 species in the list...

I get this one on undescribed/synonyms either, but it is already described?

Also the next 2 fishes with a scientific name on that list (Ancistrus and Aspidoras) are already described.

Marc,

That's because it's marked as "Not described" in the data. Do an edit on it and you will see what I mean...

That's "working as it should" with regards to the species search function. It just happens to be wrong in the datasheet (the radio button for "not desccribed" is selected).

I've submitted an update with "original species", as per CoF. Although the confirmation seems to be empty. I've submitted one with "not original genus", and I will submit a "original genus" again.

[I'm almost guessing this is the type of thing we'd SHOULD find with this combination of searches - even more interesting would be searching of "undescribed with synonyms", as that is CLEARLY something wrong].

I think that's what I just said? Anyway, if you're both "cleansing" the data, suggest Mats works from the bottom of the list?

Yes, I wrote my reply whilst I also checked things and made edits...

I think I have a few other things to do, so if Marc wants to go through suspicious entries (at his own pace), that's fine by me.

Re: Question about Admin page

Post by Marc van Arc »

I'm nearly there (Rineloricaria), so this list will be "cleaned" in a few minutes.
That leaves about 650 sp/cf/aff/L-nr/C-nr species -)

Soon: not original genus - no synonyms

CoF is usually a lot quicker, so if all you are looking at is the Synonyms/Author/etc, then Catalog of Fishes is much better. And it's got type location as well!
