Lori ID, think Ancistrus sp Ucalayi

Post by xingumike »

Just found a bunch of these lurking at the back of a tank with a Gibby in.

My best guess would be Ancistrus ucayali but having never kept them I can't be sure.

Note the lip bristles, male?

I only got one, I may go back later and get some more, I've dropped it into the big tank now, will no doubt see it in a few months, it's so small (< 1 inch)

Difficult to say what it is.

I'm not sure if this species [well, we don't even know which species it actually is yet!] is one of those where both sexes get bristles, or just males.

Are these being bred and sold in commercial quantities in the US, UK etc (ucalayi i mean)?

Reason I ask is there is no market for anything except 'Commons' here, by that I mean Pterygoplichthys spp.

This is the first time in over 4 years I have seen any other genus for sale so I would imagine it must be a sp that appears on a list alongside Neons, Mollies et al as nobody would have gone looking for a left field selection.

I'm going to get some more I think, to go alongside a L330 that is being imported for me next week

I have seen a similar looking fish [I never got to the bottom of what species it actually was - just that it was "like sp. Ucayali"] that were captive bred (I think the ones I saw were from the Czech republic, but that doesn't mean that they can't be bred elsewhere too).

Oh well, picked up 2 more and they have disappeared to the depths of the tank to fatten up.

Confident that they are at least Ancistrus so will be happy for life in their current set up, will wait and see if anyone has any further thoughts on species.

Thanks Yann, long time no speak I hope you are well?

Saw at least 2 last night going crazy on my Aufwuchs laden wood so should have them fattened up in not time.
