Spotted Raphael Cat, sick

Post by KDunning »

Hello! I'm new here so if this is posted in the wrong section I do apologize.
So my tank broke out in Ich about a week and a half ago and I have since then been treating it. I have a 40 Gal. with the bio filteration system and a proper sized heater. In my tank I have a 2 1/2 inch Spotted Raphael cat, 2 three inch Silver Dollars and a Pleco. I do a partial water change (when the fish aren't sick) every week to 2 weeks. My temps were set between 76-78 degrees Ferenheit (before Ich outbreak). I tested my water and all my levels are normal.
I went and bought what I assumed was the safest way to go about treating everyone in the tank and so I bought Kordon Rid Ich Plus Disease Treatment. It says it treats Ich and is safe for most scaleless fish including most catfishes, loaches and tetras. I just finished day 4 of the treatment. During the treatment duration I took out both my carbon filters, kept the lights off, bumped my temps to about 82 degrees Ferenheit and did a 25% water change everyday.
Now I see less of the white blisters that the Ich caused but my Raphael cat is turning red :( All of his white spots are a fleshy pinkish red color. He's breathing harder than normal and tends to stay hidden. Normally he is a very active fish at night and a voracious eater but hasn't been since the Ich outbreak. I hope someone here can help me and point me in the right direction before my Raphael Cat dies. I would really hate to lose him, he's definitely my favorite fish out of the whole tank. Thanks
-Katie

Oh and I forgot I've added salt to the tank on accident before reading that Raphaels can't handle salt :/ I'm just bound to do everything wrong. 8-|

One thing that'll help is to massively increase the oxygenation as the warmer water doesn't hold oxygen well. Airstones with the fine powder like bubbles are good.

Katie,
Can you post a picture of your ? It is highly unlikely we can give you an accurate diagnosis without one. Also, has the ich cleared on the other fishes?

Yes the Ich has cleared up. Unfortunately I got home from work today to find my Raphael cat at the top of the tank behind the filteration tube. His spots are white, his tail and fins are still pinkish, but he has a blood spot near his mouth and he is panting :( I'm thinking he is having an allergic reaction to the Rid Ich. I turned my temps back down, put my carbon filters in and I'm about to do a 50% water change to remove any of the medicine that's left. I'll try and get a pic posted, and maybe a before and after so you have something to judge it next to. I'm going to feel so bad if I kill this cat

Katie,
That wound looks to be a bacterial infection. I would try melafix
http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... IYBEPMCMAE

and keep up on the water changes (20% every 2-3 days). Also, does the fish have its own cave?

Katie, you got some great advice by a couple of experts in Richard and Shane. I would also suggest keeping the lights off in the tank for the time being--besides feeding time for the diurnal fish in your tank. I'm sure your raphael cat will appreciate it.

Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate the feedback. I'll have to get the Melafix tomorrow. Before I put it in the tank though, is there any ill side effects? This whole Ich thing has been a nightmare (although I'm sure others have lost far more than I) I just don't want to rock the boat anymore than I have to at this point. I kept my lights off for the most part today except for like you said to feed the other fish. When I did this my Raphael actually swam from his spot up by the filter back down to his hiding spot. I suppose this is an improvement. Yesterday he seemed like he was on the ragged edge of dying, today he seems a little better
Here is my set up. I haven't bought an air stone yet, but its on the shopping list for tomorrow. As you can see the Raphael has a huge "man cave" but I think its too big so I'll be changing that soon also.

None at all. Also, keep up on the frequent water changes while the fish heals.

Well I haven't posted in a while. Mostly because my catfish died. I took out the big decorative rock and all I have in my 40 gal now is 2 silver dollars, a pleco and some plants for them to hide in. I'm going to let the tank rest for a while and maybe later on add to it again. I'm kind of irritated with myself at the moment. I did one last water change after the catfish died and there's been a bacteria bloom. How long does this take for it to clear up again? My water is a little cloudy.

Welcome to the Forum, Katie. Sorry to hear. Maybe you've seen it already but the info here is about striped raphs but may be of use to you, even if for the future purposes: http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... it=+humbug

Exactly the same thing happened to my raphs 3 years ago. I've read the same thing you did so I was careful with the salt, using 1/2 a doze. They still got all red and puffed up and died. In the thread I linked above, I related that on page 2 (bottom) to 3 but nobody else seems to think that it was the salt that killed my raphs. So, for now, I do not think so either, as many keepers reported using salt on their raphs and having no problems.

What bacteria bloom are you asking about?

My water is all cloudy looking and has been for over a week now. I was told to do partial water changes by one person but by another person I was told to not touch the tank and to let it rest. I really don't want to lose the remaining fish in the tank. Not sure what I can do to help the bloom though. I installed an air pump and a bubble wall and I added bacteria suppliment. Is there anything else I can do?

Viktor- That was a very good post that you showed me. I had not seen it yet.
Wrasse- I did a water change today, but I only took out 10%. I checked the filter and there is nothing wrong with it that I can see. I put more water conditioner in, the bacteria suppliment and a table spoon of salt for the 5 gallons of water I removed.
Other than my Pleco I don't have any other catfish in my tank. I'm clearing out the spare bedroom at the moment and maybe I'll add another tank in there once I get my 40 gal under control. I want to try Raphs out again but I think I'll wait until I have a bigger tank. Thanks everyone that has given their input, I really appreciate it. See you guys when I have another catfish
