WhaT catfish is right

Post by Catfish? »

I have an 85 gallon tank with a 6 in. Silver arowana, 4-6 in. Clown knife, 2 giant angelfish, and one small 4 in. Bala shark. I need a catfish that gets atleast 7 inches but gets no bigger than 15 inches and is not aggresive. I was thinking of the size range of a pictus or four lined but i was wondering if there are any other possible catfish. I also want the catfish to have long barbles and look really cool. Any ideas?

Welcome to Planet Catfish! You can do one easy thing: find Pimelodus pictus or P. blochii in Cat-eLog. Go the size box. Click on near, nearer, same size links and it will filter all 3000 cats for you by size. Read on behavior/compatibility and make a few choices, or 10 choices, or 20, whatever.

Then weed out the ones you cannot get a hold of locally or via i-net and/or afford.

Then, perhaps, you will get a better advising.

Sun catfish, Horabagrus brachysoma, comes to mind. Pimelodus ornatus, blochii, tetramerus and another 30 close cousins can be named.

Do you want an active catfish that swims a lot during the day? Or, does visibility of the catfish not matter to you?

was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read your post--long barbels, looks cool, will be fine with your current stock. They don't quite reach 7" TL, but they should be fine with your fish. However, they are not very active during daylight.

At nighttime, it's a different story. I used to have a group of 6 of them in a 125gal tank and it was a lot of fun to observe them cruising the tank (and the other inhabitants) at night using a red light.

You do realize that your arowana and clown knife are going to outgrow your tank, sooner or later, yes?

So, how is it going? Have you tried what I proposed or any other selection routines?
