I have three of these panaque's....I believe they are all Rio Xingu

Now I can buy this ones, also Xingu....I want to know for sure I'm not mixing species

The three of yours, Rob, definitely look like Xingus. But I'm unsure of the Amazon Aquatics one. It could just be the angle of the picture but the head looks quite rounded and dome shape, whereas a Xingu head shape at that size (I'm guessing about 20cm+) would be more elongated and have a more pronounced nuchal hump. The shape and layout of the lines differs as well, they're quite thin and less 'block' shaped than a Xingu.

Well that's what I think anyway, based on that picture. Something that's bugged me, since more and more Panaque cf. armbrusteri have become available recently, is that I find it harder to stick with the 4 prescribed river varieties we're used to.

L27 Tocantins.

I also had some doubts about the amazon-aquatics specie; I also thought it's a Tocantis specie

When I took the pictures (8-9) in this entry I didn't know better, but picture 5, 6 and 7 is Araguaia and all other is Teles Pires.

I had some contact with some Germans (Elko from welsfans.de) and Ingo Seidel and they confirmed that the first three are indeed Xingu's....they had some reasonable doubts at the amazon,de .
I also have contact with amazon and the confirmed that they were also not sure....they would send me some more pictures. I believe that's a Rio Tocantis armbrusteri.

did you see the (german) article on tricks to ID surely Panaque armbrusteri VS Panaque nigrolineatus ? a story about number of teeth... it seems obvious, once you have 2 pictures of it under the eyes...

I'll try to get this back !

Panaque armbrusteri = Rio Tapajos, all other is different in Brazil, thats the reason they have the cf between genus and specie name.

Does the "xingu", "tocantins" and "teles pires" variety share the same dental pattern and number of teeth?
Leaving araguaia on it's own having a pattern more similar to P. Nigro?

I believe they do. Have a look at these comparisons I made about the river varieties, although in light of what Janne said, I'm not sure if the Araguaia and Tapajos are correct IDs.
