Panting banjo

Post by French47 »

I have a couple of Bunocephalus coracoideus and today for the first time one of them is in its usual place half covered with sand but appears to be panting, is this normal and I have missed it before or is there a problem ? they are in 100 gall tank, 2 x 1500 ltr filters and zero on all water tests.
As you might have guessed I have not kept these fish before.
Cheers

This is normal behavior for banjo cats, and I have frequently seen them do that. It is probably related to an alternative mode of propulsion that aspredinids utilize, namely thrusting jets of water from their opercular openings to skip along the substrate (although I also see this “panting” a lot in fish half-buried in the substrate and not moving).

A big thank-you, to you Silurus. Now I can sit back and enjoy and not go into panic mode.
Thanks once again for taking the time to reply.
