Two different kinds of tentacles in Ancistrus sp.

Post by Quo »

Well. Common Ancistrus are some of the my favourite fish, and bought them in different occasions and different LFS with different suppliers.

Although in the picture, two of them (of the same supplier) have thicker, pointed and longer tentacules (tentacles), while the older ancistrus has very short and Y-shapped tentacules, despite being by far the oldest ancistrus, he was already large, while the other two almost like fry. Are these different species despite at the first look, all of them look the same?

while I was changed them to another aquarium, I took the pics with my phone, but these dont help much, do not look different at all in the pics... but it really his. Or the tentacles vary with specimen?

the left one has Y-shapped tentacles

Hi,
I believe that they can vary between specimens.

I have one where each tenticle looks like a deer antler, and another where each tenticle looks like a moose antler.

Generally I think that they branch more as the fish ages.

Cheers

Geoff
