Breeding Chiloglanis neumanni ??

Hi

Have anyone ever breed Chiloglanis neumanni?
Even been able to sex them?

I have a Group of 9pcs from Lake Malawi and would like to try and breed them

Very cool video. They are a lot more active than I thought they would be. I've only seen 2 pictures of them, and the live video was a real treat. Thanks so much for sharing.

Wow, they are are lovely little hyperactive catfish, they put my four sedatory Euchilichthys to shame and are far more social!

Chiloglanis once settled are an active and durable fish.

In the information I have there is no mention of sexual dimorphism between the sexes...you could watch for any possible differences in the shape of the caudal fin...the length of the lobes.(I wont get into whether the true C.neumanni is also from this area)

My two seem identical except for when I photographed the ventral region there is a difference and I believe I have a male and female. I could easily do this as they often are stuck to the front glass with their mouth.
You could try this...it would be a project to keep eight sorted while shooting.

I'm at work at the moment so can't check but doesn't 'Seegers' have some pics that show sexual dimorphism in some species of chiloglanis?

Same answer for both...yes, but it is different from species to species...can not generalize...in the caudal for example it could be the upper rays,the lower rays, one square one rounded, extended middle rays or no difference at all.

Hmmmm, top male bottom female?

I'd be interesting to see the same 2 fish from above to consider pectoral fin shape - this may possibly be a factor as it can be with several cats

Hi

My guess is the lower fish is a male because "something" is outside the body just before the analfin.

Sorry for my bad English as I don't know proper name for that "thing"

Genital papillae - yes i missed that thinking it was part of the substrate!

As a quick general look i'd say you were right & my first guess was wrong, based on body shapes & the papillae evident. I was looking purely on the tail where the upper fish looks to have more pointed lobes with perhaps some elongation of the lower lobe(?)suggesting male?

Been moving some tanks arround and took few Pictures of them in a White bucket

"Think" this is a female

Yes that is my plan, but at moment they are in a 56L aquarium with some small Aulonocara sp. "Stuartgranti Maleri" fry.

Next step is to try and find information about breeding...

One of my plans was RO Water and if that isn't eanough adding minerals to the Water.

Btw. we also saw some of these catfish in shallow Waters in my 2008 trip to Malawi.

Here we saw them arround the rocks and pebbles just before the boat. Water depth was from 0cm(Beach) and arround20-30cm

Sorry for long time and no update...

Still no results on eggs that I have seen, but took this photo today - hope that is somewhat positive..

Any idea on getting them going?

Wish I had some good suggestions to get them spawning, but I do not. Keeping them alive for four years however is amazing. I collected and maintained several species in South Africa and found them very difficult to keep alive over the long term.
Have you tried clay caves or even flat stones like we use to spawn Chaetostoma?

At moment they have clay tubes and marbles on bottom so if there's eggs adults cant get to them

I think they did it as I was at work, so not much info's...

Also I need to figure out what triggered it as for now this is "just" a one time occurrence.

Sadly there's not much I can tell..

Ok today 6 have hatched and..

I found 5 eggs but they are faster than me so managed to eat 2 eggs before I had removed them.

Time spent under 3 sec before they got to them - fast fish!
