Help save the Rainforest?

Post by clothahump »

Could you afford a small donation to help save the Rainforest of Brazil?
Without the Rainforest there will be no Amazon, no Amazon = no Amazonian fish.

Being cynical, how does the donor _know_ you have paid their money to the fund? Also, how do you cover the paypal fee? Wouldn't it just be better to detail how you pay the money to the fund and let other do that?

Tim,
I do not want to sound too cynical, but have you researched this organization at all? I am not saying that they are not legitimate, but I think we all tend to be a bit more careful these days. Several statements included in their explaination of who they are and what they do are incorrect. They state that they are buying land to help protect the Yanomami, but the Yanomami do not live in the Amazon. The Yanomami are an Upper Rio Orinoco tribe. All of the Yanomami lands in Venezuela were declared a biosphere and/or National Park in 1991 (32,000 square miles). Brazil was under a great deal of pressure to do the same and in November of 1991 created a 36,000 square mile reserve. The Yanomami have exclusive rights to this land. I can not say how well the Brazilians protect this land, but the Yanomami lands in Venezuela are still under the Catholic church's protection (NOT the Venezuelan government, and yes things are not that far beyond the movie "The Mission") and it is very hard to get permission to go there. I can tell you some funny stories about trying to get there sometime.
Also, what does the title to the land that the Brazilian government sends you say? Most land in South America's jungles is bought and sold by the resource. In other words, you can own oil, diamond, or rubber rights to a certain amount of acres, but you do not own the land in the way that you do in the States or Europe.
Anyway, I really do not want to sound negative because I strongly believe that our hobby should try to give something back and I think you have a great idea. I just have seen to many "Save the Rainforest" and other environmental scams not to be cautious. I'll try to do some checking through work. We have a guy that handles our relations with NGOs.
