Filter on a fry tank

Post by Taratron »

Setting up a 10 gallon for my ever-growing bronze cory fry, as well as some peacock gudgeon fry.

Tank is going to have masses of java moss and hornwort to keep down the nitrates, but I figure having a filter in there is a good idea as well.

But I'm having a heck of a time finding any suitable filters. I was thinking of a sponge filter, but can't find any brands around!

Any help, or product placement ideas?

I use hydro sponge filters as secondary filtration in most of my tanks. Then when I set up a new tank, I can just use 60-70% water from established tanks, and use filter media or sponges from established tanks. Presto, no more cycling or worrying about my fish. The sponges come in different sizes, and the internal parts are mostly interchangeable between them. I use them all over the house.

I personally tend to dislike the air pump bubbling sound, so I use them with different sizes and ratings of powerheads, or I use adapters and use them to prefilter hang on the back filters. They make an excellent source of food for young fish to graze on, and basically have become a mainstay in my tanks. I think I bought the last ones from petsolutions.com, but I've also purchased them from thatpetplace.com in the past. You can order catalogs from either place online, or even just place your order online.

I really enjoyed my peacock gudgeons when I kept them. They were great fish. I never got around to spawning them though, congratulations! They are supposed to be a bit more difficult to raise than average egg layers.

Hope that helps :)
