Do these need a certain number of fish to be happy? Or can you have only 1 of these?

If you're buying small ones, I'd buy four or five with the view to their being a pair in there. So, you're looking for a male and a couple of females but a couple of pairs would work in a 36"+ tank.

If you're buying adults, get a pair.
