Odd behavior from Synodontis sp.

After a 75% water change a day ago this Synodontis has been out and about, dug a small pit under a log and has been hiding in the pothos rootw at the top of the tank. Will intermittently go into its cave but not for long. I did forget to plug the heater back in so the temp dropped to 70 overnight and is now back up to 77. It is about 7mths old (total estimate as it was about 1" long in April /May) Also unsure of the species.

Could the temp change have triggered a breeding response? Or is its cave too small and it doesn't feel enclosed enough. Until now I've rarely seen this fish out and about except late at night or when feeding, only to quickly hide when spotted.

Also noticed smalls bumps on its sides, but are evenly spaced and don't resemble any parasite.

the bumps as you call them on the sides are sensory nodes, you will also notice they are in a pattern....on the head area they are just bumps I believe.

The odd behavior is most likely because of the changes you made and it will settle back down, your fish is a hybrid and is likely to get to the 7 inch range.

Looks healthy. The behavior probably cannot have anything to do with breeding as it is too young, it's a hybrid (they are likely sterile; looks like of this most common kind http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/spe ... ies_id=602 ), and it seems to be alone? Birger's an expert, in synos in particular.

Temp change can definitely trigger spawning behavior. But the low drop in temp could also be the cause in the change in behavior. He is one nice looking cat.

Awesome guys. Thanks for confirming what I was thinking.

As a side question, I've been trying to find a guide for iding synodontis species but having no luck. I bought it thinking it was an ocelifer but it's been pretty well confirmed to be a hybrid so I was taken on that one...still happy with the cat just not what I thought it was...

Nothing wrong with getting a hybrid, as long as you didn't pay too much for it. The real shame is when somebody pays high prices believing they are getting a rare Syno and in fact they are getting a common hybrid.
