Did you know fantastic help is an anagram of Planet Catfish? This forum is for those of you with pictures of your catfish who are looking for help identifying them. There are many here to help and a firm ID is the first step towards keeping your catfish in the best conditions.
I would agree with Larry, your fish is certainly a female. Concerning the species... since the exact ID of the common Ancistrus is rather unclear...that is one common Ancistrus ...

Alrighty then, lets see if I can add to the confusion a bit
This is my "supposidly" albino common bristlenose who I thought was female, it is the same size(but much fatter) as the brown one but has no bristles at all. What you think, common, male, female??
Ok and to add even more confusion this is a male bristlenose I have(different tank), never found out the species, its bristles branch out at the top(I dont think commons do this).Soooo does anyone know a)what kind it is and b)clould I pair it with either of the ones I have already posted.
Thanks in advance
T,
These all just look like A. triradiatus to me, including the albino. Look at the wavy caudal fin pattern. They all have the same patterns. Looks to me like the same spp. under different light and in different modes.

The albino is a definite female. The male looks like the commons I used to get from early spawns of albinos, but there is really no way of knowing that to be fact. I wouldn't attempt a spawning with either female. There is too much chance that you'll just be raising hybridized fish.
If you're looking to spawn bristle nose, try getting a group at the same time and shipment. Else, there is less chance of hybrids if you can get an albino male.

Impossible only means that somebody hasn't done it correctly yet.
Well I think I'll try spawning them anyway, just to see if I can.I'm not too bothered if they are hybrids(I'll cross that bridge when I come to it but none will go to the lfs).
I just want to breed some bristles and I dont want to go buying more
For sure the albinos is a female as well.
Have you noticed how the bristles are not only on the snout margin on your male but also go back in between the eyes, only males develop such features...
Regarding trying to produce Hybrids, things have been already said many times and I think you know the side of most of us regarding such "behaviors"...
Just a quick thought but instead of producing possible Hybrids, why not buying 5-6 youngs common and let them grow together, you will end up for sure with at least a pair and would not have to worry about the blood strain...

Ok well after having the male in with the females I have to say I'm almost sure he and the brown female are the same species, I'll get a pic of them together and you can maybe tell me if I'm right.
Ok here they are together(they share the zuccini which is unusual with any of my other pl*cos). You think they are the same species? Also I have a 10gal(quarentine) tank containing a small red severum(the new blood red kind), if I added a few spawning sites would I have a better chance of spawning them??
Yes there are some similarities which could make us think that they belong to the same species.
You can add extra caves, the male will choose one that he will like best and once this is done you can take out the extra...just leave the extra for a week or so...
Ok so I have them in together and the male has chosen a cave but other than that nothing is happening. The female is pretty active but the male just sits in his cave a lot, will they eventualy get it on?
