Another distribution map error: Ituglanis boitata in Iran

Post by bekateen »

in Iran?

The title says it all. ;-) Most likely one of those typographical errors within the input data as a ` instead of ' (or something like that).

I just read that there are two species of Glyptothorax endemic to Iran: and . The paper did not mention whether or not other genera are endemic to Iran.

Probably safer than Iraq or Syria right now. :-(

I apologize for bringing this up if I'm jumping the gun, because maybe it's still in the queue... but did this already get fixed? The species appears in the recent Cat-e-Log updates list and it's left the "To vet" list, but the distribution map still shows Iran as the type locality (on the map itself).

I had a look at it, and tried to re-code the quotes etc, but it was still wrong after the revised data submission for .

I think it's fixed now. A trick I learned is to take the co-ords from the description and paste them into Google maps. Their interpretation engine is much better than ours (and ours is pretty good). Google then shows the right place on the map, but the description shows a "clean" set of co-ords (29°31'26.0"S 50°18'56.0"W). I then cut and paste this over the co-ords in the cat-elog as a data submission. Then it worked - bit of a fiddle if you're not used to google maps and data submissions, but it should work well for any data error of this kind.

Cheers,

Looks good to me too Jools. Great job.

If you've never seen it, I use this website to find and test lat/long coordinates:

http://www.mapcoordinates.net/en

You can enter the coordinates (either as degrees min sec or as degrees with decimals) in the "show location" field. It maps the location. Also, if you click your mouse anywhere on the map, it will give you back the lat/long coordinates as degrees with decimals.

Here is a good website for directly translating Lat/Long degrees min sec to decimals and vice versa:

http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/convert_lat_long/
