Hisonotus from Uruguay?

Post by MChambers »

I picked up a group of this fish yesterday. They are F1: the parents were collected in Uruguay (I don't know the collection location) and were sold as some sort of Hisonotus.

When I go through the list of Hisonotus in the Cat-eLog, they look most similar to notatus, but those are listed only as in Brazil. My fish don't clearly seem like any of the Uruguayan Hisonotus, but I'm not very good as identifying fish.

They do look like fish I collected myself in Uruguay. I was told they are Hisonotus

I don't know much about loricarids, can't say what sistinguishes aone species from another, therefore I will not say they are descendants from Uruguay fish, but they could well be
cats have whiskers

Oh, I have no doubt they were collected in Uruguay. I know the person who collected them, and I know he went to Uruguay once or twice collecting fish. He's not the seller, however, and I've not been able to contact the collector. The seller got these fish from him a while back.

Another slightly better photo, taken today, now that the fish have had a little time to settle in to the new home.

As someone who's very jealous and trying to get ahold of these fish myself, I think those are indeed Hisonotus. I've heard they can range from green-brown coloration, and the intensity can vary depending on their environment (if they are in a heavily planted, green tank or a blackwater low plant tank or whatever) and that their color can also vary by gender maybe? I may be stretching on the gender thing, but a seller I know seems to differentiate between his males and females by color: males are more brown, females are more green. Here's his website: http://amazontropics.blogspot.com I think if you have any questions, you should ask him, but from what I've seen of the species, those look legit.

Thanks for the post. Looks like he has Hisonotus aky. Aky must be very cool, especially when they get that emerald green color.

I'm sure I've got Hisonotus, and they're from Uruguay, but I don't think they are aky. Not really sure which Hisonotus I've got, so that's why I posted here. These apparently spawn quite readily, too, so I hope to have them breed.

That could be it, Jools. The picture in the Cat-eLog threw me a bit, since the fish there looks fairly grey, and mine are more brown, but that difference could be due to the lighting or other tank conditions.
