L240 and L129 question and new to the pleco

Post by Cookie_pleco »

Just got these guys about three days ago. Can any of you guys tell me how come the L240 having the white colour on his body sometimes and the L129 is still not eating yet? I tried the algae wafer but I never seen the L129 show any interest of it. The L240 is already eating shrimp pellets and sinking tablet.

L129 is Hypancistrus debilittera. Here is what this site tells us about their diet:
Omnivore. They still seem to prefer meaty foods such as blood worms, gammarus or brine shrimps. Commercially prepared food such as Spirulina tabs are also eaten.

If you can get live black worms or live tubifex worms, sink a small glass bowl (shaped like a ramekin, but a little bigger and taller- straight vertical walls) in the tank and add an ounce of worms directly in the bowl. I bet both species of pleco will love you.

Good luck, Eric

Neither are algae eaters and they both need meatier foods...… they should also have some wood in the tank along with some places to hide. L129's in particular eat a good amount of wood for a Hypancistrus. The light spots you are talking about that he has sometimes I am assuming is because of stress..... not having anywhere to hide is more than likely the reason for this. Some caves, wood, rocks, anything that would be secure and still give them someplace to hide would be a good addition. Also try mixing some garlic juice with some pellet foods before adding it to the tank. It may help him to eat and with internal parasites.

alright guys I just added a large piece of driftwood and a lot of lava rocks to their tank in two days ago and they seem to more comfortable now. Also should I keep the temp at 80F?

The wood is good. I'm a little worried that the lava rock might be too sharp and hurt them.

They could be kept at 80 to 84 pretty safely.

Good luck,
Eric
