Raising L201 fry

Post by WichitaFalls »

Up until now, I have only bred ancistrus. My L201 breeding group produced 2 spawns. I have each spawn in its own fry incubator. I currently alternate between Repashy Solient Green and Bottom Scratcher and occasional crushed up flake food. My question is at what point should/could I transition to baby brine or frozen foods. I thought about feeding them some zucchini. Thank you in advance for your input. The fry are growing and active. No losses. I clean their container every day.

This fish, while omnivorous, prefers meaty foods. However, baby/young Hypans need more veggie matter in their diet than older fish. Rather than alternating between the two Repashy foods. consider making a blend. I normally do not pull eggs but allow offspring to hatch and grow in the breeding tank until spreading them out becomes necessary. So I mix the Soilent as 20-25% of the total with either Bottom Scratcher or Spawn & Grow. That way you have one food that provides both meat and veggies.

I do not do live even though I know this is the best choice. I use Hikari frozen foods as the next best thing. For newly free swimming fry I feed BBS right away. Once the fry gain some size, I will also feed frozen cyclops. Fry easily eat the Repashy, so I have no issues feeding this for the fry as well as the older plecos and I will do so from day one of free swimming.

As always this is my approach and is neither necessarily the best nor the only way one can do things.

There is nothing cuter than a pleco fry (except maybe a cory fry).

p.s. Newly hatched BBS have a very short window for feeding before their nutritional value drops drastically. Many years ago on a general fish forum I quoted a marine biologist who wrote what I stated about feeding BBS soon after they hatch. An argument about this ensued on the site and I contacted the author directly and learned a heck of a lot about feeding BBS. While the article was written for a sw site, it covers all the basics and they do apply to fw fish. The main difference in feed brine to sw fish v.s. fw fish is that sw fish require more "unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA)" to meet the needs of sw fish. You can read the article here (there is a section specifically on BBS).
