Hara

Post by Chrysichthys »

I don't know anything about these; are they a fastwater fish? They seem to keep to the substrate. LFS sold me Hara haroi and H. jerdoni, but says they think the jerdoni are actually Hara hara. Is there any difference in their requirements?

Hi!

Well If you had join the Catfish Study Group (UK) you would have found in the new Cat Chat ( the quarterly journal of the CSG) a great article from Steven Grant about Hara...and another article about breeding Hara jerdoni (form a different author( can't remember the name))
Basically the is no much differences in the requirement only that Hara jerdoni is a really small species, so just have to be careful what you will feed them
Of course these species should be best kept in a species tank as well!
I should rego through the articles and I tell you more if needed to!
Cheers

Yes, they are fast water fish and prefer cooler, well aerated water.

I would like to correct myself. After some more research, I have learned that at least Hara jerdoni are NOT fast water fish, and in the aquarium, do not appreciate turbulent water conditions.

BTW, if anyone on this forum is currently keeping or previously kept Hara jerdoni or Hara hara for any length of time, what are you/did you feed them.

They suck up bloodworms like sausages. Will eat other live foods with very little encouragement.

Chrysichthys, it's better to provide them with cooler water, though. Something around 20°C. And if the Hara horai are identified as such from the exporter, then they are actually Pseudolaguvia (which will need a current).

They were very interested in bloodworms, enchyträa and mysis.
