I think it's time you got a new impeller (if not a new filter).

yeppers - let me relate the tale of lying abed in my apartment one night thinking "won't someone please crank that **** tap a little more so the pipe doesn't whine" for about twenty minutes before I got up to look . . . this might sound like a dumb question, but was there water in the chamber? Mine ran dry, simply because I left the lid a little ajar - had it for twenty years never a lick of a problem, never replaced anything, even after that incident. You might want to yoink the impeller out and clean the chamber with a q-tip or something, snails can get in there . . . also make sure the tube assembly is correctly assembled, it does make a difference. Good luck!

There is only one moving part in that filter that has the potential to make noise, that's the impellor, scraping against something trapped in the housing. Take it out, clean it out, or ignore it and buy a new one in a day or two when it goes the way of the others....
