Long time listener, first time caller

Post by Heck »

41F from California, professional horse rancher. I returned to fishkeeping after a long hiatus, intending to just restart my old 29 gallon with some synodontis nigriventris and maybe Corys, but I was mistakenly sold mystus leucophasis instead of synodontis nigriventris, and things have kinda snowballed from there 😂

I found this site and MFK while Googling my MLs to figure out how to care for them. I've already gotten a ton of advice on (and off of) MFK from especially Eric and Viktor.

I'm still trying to figure out the etiquette on this site - is it that we are supposed to minimize extra chatter? I'm sure someone will tell me if I misstep.

It's nice to have a site specifically for catfish. I currently have:
Mystus leucophasis x 4
Horabagrus brachysoma x 2
Synodontis nigriventris x 6
Platydoras armatulus x 2
Pimelodus pictus x 3
Synodontis eupterus x 3
And one Epalzeorhynchos bicolor.

Happy to be here, looking forward to learning more from everyone.

Welcome aboard the good ship PlanetCatfish! We're a pretty relaxed bunch, you're unlikely to misstep but I guess because some of us have been postiing here for more than two decades, we can be a little brief at times! :-)
is a fish I've always wanted to key - nice collection you've got there.

Cheers,

I'm pretty sure MLs are what George Strait was talking about when he sang, "If you can do anything else, baby be good to yourself."

...but they're my Crime Fish and I love them. Bucket, Digger, The Other One, and Jose. I'm just crossing my fingers they don't murder each other.

Or the eupterus who's in with them - he's the best. If they want to murder the sun cats or the rtbs, I'll allow it (especially the rtbs, he's been asking for it).

The Mystus will get aggressive with each other as they grow. Big tank and lots of different areas will help. It'd be reallly cool to see if you can get at least a pair out of them. They are easy to sex once a bit larger.

Yeah, it's not a great situation (it was an accident!). They're in a 125 with a lot of hides and I'm crossing my fingers. Not sure how I'll handle it if they get too nasty - Rubbermaid tubs in the short term, I guess.

I'll try for some pics. My glass is scratched to hell which makes it harder.

Hi @Heck,

Are you attending the Sacramento Aquarium Society meetings in Folsom? If not, I recommend them. The club is very active and lots of good fish go through the auctions.

The next meeting is this Saturday at 3pm, Round Table Pizza on Madison at Greenback (the address is Greenback, but the store fronts to Madison).

Maybe I'll see you there.

Cheers,
Eric

Just saw this - Sat the 4th? Folsom is a bit of a hike for me (I'm in Woodland), but maybe. It would be fun to check out.

Yes this Saturday Jan 4th. Sadly, I just found out today I won't be there this weekend. My wife needs me. I also won't be there in Feb or March because I'm speaking at other clubs then. But I should be there in April and May; May is our big annual FIN-DIG. That's worth attending if you can. Here's our club's websites: http://www.sacramentoaquariumsociety.info/index.html and https://www.facebook.com/Sacramentoaquariumsociety/.

Cheers, Eric
