New Pseudomystus

Post by Silurus »

Ng, HH, 2025. Clarifying the identity of Pseudomystus stenomus, with the description of a new species of Pseudomystus from Borneo (Actinopterygii: Bagridae). Raffles Bulletin of Zoology 73: 318–335.

Abstract

This study clarifies the identity of Pseudomystus stenomus, a freshwater bagrid catfish originally described from Java, typically identified by its elongate caudal fin and indistinct pale yellow markings on a brown body. An examination of specimens identified as P. stenomus and similar-looking species revealed the existence of three previously-described species (P. breviceps, P. flavipinnis, and P. stenomus), and a fourth unnamed species, which is described herein as P. nuchalis, new species. Here I diagnose and describe all four species and also designate a lectotype for P. breviceps.

I think most of the images labeled are P. breviceps.
