Ancistrus sp.(4)? (Albino Bristle)

Post by krin »

Hi, first post and all figured I should get that out of the way. Been browsing the site for some time, excellent resource.

I picked up this little guy for three dollars at a local department/grocery store (Meijer, perhaps some of you know it). I normally do not buy fish from stores like that, but they have nice clean tanks and healthy looking fish and generally the people working the department are fairly knowledible about most of the fish there. The guy was pretty small when I got him, about an inch and a half long; he was in a tank marked "Common Plecos", he was the only albino in the tank and I just thought he was far to neat not to buy.

I'm starting to noticed the growth on his muzzle, and the light dot pattern on his body; basically he looks like he is turning out to be an albino bristlenose. I love plecos, but I'm do not have a ton of knowledge on them so I am really guessing here. Can anyone confirm what he is? I hate to tell someone I have an albino bristle if he's really just a common and I'm just dumb. Anyway, here is the picture I have, he is on the bottom and the picture on top is a picture of an albino bristle from this site.

Well the image isn't working, here is a link.

Thanks!

Thanks, I'm really happy with my find now. Originally thought he was just a common old pleco. I had a couple of bristlenose, but unfortunately one disappeared and the other died. I'm looking forward to watching this guy grow up.

You have a male albino Ancistrus dolichopterus. If you can find a female they are not hard to breed. All you need is a small cave or PVC tube.

IMO: Ancistrus triradiatus, albino form. Look at the Cat-eLog

I think corybreed is following this ages old mislead that the common bristlenose = A.dolichopterus.

Being 20 minutes away, I remember these from a couple months ago. They were in the ad tank on sale for $6 (2for12) so I bought a couple in Shields. The checker was wrong so I somehow got em for $3 apiece too...of course it all works out in the end w/ dept. store fish and only one was left after 2 weeks (had a reddened pectoral spine it couldn't kick).

But it should grow pretty fast, ours is already a 3.5" algaemower..
