What am I?

Post by Judazzz »

Hello all,

I have bought a sweet-looking pleco a while ago: it was labelled as Clown Pleco, but I'm pretty confident it is not (I've had a Clown, and it looked really different, even though it was smaller...)

Here's some pictures of my mystery catfish:

Oh, and while we're at it, does anyone know what type of Royal Plec this little fellow is (what local variant, L-number, etc.)? All I know about him is that it is a Royal of some sort, and that is was very pricey for a 3" fart! So no collection point, etc.
He was most definitely worth the money, though - one of the most entertaining fish I've ever owned, changing wood into sawdust in such a high speed it would make a termite colony turn green of envy... :P) And he started eating and exploring (in bright sunlight!) within half an hour after release.

Thanks in advance... 8)

Your first fish are a Panaque but I'm not sure wich one... L-271 are the closest match I think, your second fish looks like L-190.

Hi!

I believe the first one of this L02, L74 L169 LDA01...which all are very similar....

The second fish is pretty likely to be (L190)

Nice fish and pics by the way...
Cheers

Thanks for your suggestions (and nice comments), guys...

About the first fish:
After browsing the Cat-eLog, I'd say the first pleco looks more like a L002 than a L169 (latter has wider bands: dark and light bands are about the same width).

So a Tiger "Peckoltia" perhaps, although it also resembles the Iquitos Tiger Pleco (L226) a bit.
I'm not convinced it's a L271: mine has much more drab coloration, and overall just seems different in appearance...

About the second fish:
So an L190 it is then :)
Too bad I have no clue where it's from... I noticed most Royals have a striped pattern on the belly, while my little guy has dots (if wanted, I'll try to shoot a pic): maybe that's a distinctive feature for a certain locality? Or maybe it's just a juvenile trait (it's only 3-3,5" TL)?

Thanks again, people 8)

Hi!

You can rule out L226 without any doubt.
L226 is Panaque changae and the lines on the head are more numerous and thinner...

If you look in the new Datz special L-numbers your Panaque is very similar to L-271, Datz L-272 match PC L-271 more, if I'm wrong your fish is L-002.
It's not L-169/LDA-01 in any way, these I have much experience with and even breed them so I'm very sure on that.
