SuperTank in Berlin (big pictures!!)

Post by Caol_ila »

Hi!

This is a seawater tank but the sight is just amazing. We visited it last weekend in Berlin. Its free standing acrylic tube built in a hotel lobby. Capacity is 1.000.000 litres the lift within takes 7 minutes and fits 47 people.

I personally wouldn't want one. It'd be murder doing maintenance without any SCUBA knowledge!

It'd probably be cheaper to buy a small compressor and use it to surface supply air. Much cheaper and easier than SCUBA :-)

Hi!

They have 2 divers checking/cleaning the tank daily. When i saw the tv documentation about building it they always used scuba gear

This installation was put in place by ICM (International Concept Management). I remember seeing the first plans for it, someone I've been drunk with on several occasions went over to be Curator of the display. I've had meetings with ICM about redoing things at Bolton, but I think we would be a very small projects by their standards....

Hi!

mentioning the curatur what we both (my non fishaholic girl and me) realized after doing the 7 minute trip is how "empty" the tank seems. Dunno how many fish were in there but you can see on the last pic that i appears understocked...but 7 minutes is a very short time to take a good look. I wonder how much a hotel room with "sea" view would cost...
cheers

Right now there are 30 Indo-Pacific Tarpon sat waiting here in Bolton to go out there! (M. cyprinoides doesn't get anything like as big as the Atlantic Tarpon, only about 1m max)

Again interesting...
The biggest fish so far in there is a thing they called "Napoleon" fish...
My favourites were the Balistids and the batfish. They also had a shoal of a freaky looking silverish thing with a huge lower jaw. (I really have no clue of seawater fishes) :)

That's the Napoleon Wrasse (Cheilinus). They actually had them spawning back in March, but all the eggs were snaffled by the other fish. They get MUCH bigger than the ones they have, they're only youngsters yet.
