Pimodellas

Post by Beersnob »

I am interested in obtaining either Pimodella Ornatus and/or the 4-line Pimodella and need to understand if they are like Cories and need to have 1 to 2 additional similar species or the exact same species? What would be the maximum size fish they can eat? I have not checked to see the maximum mouth size so I would need this information (as opposed to anything that fits into it's mouth).

Any good tankmates would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

I have kept Pimelodus ornatus and the grow to a decent size, 10 -12 inches. At this large size they can certainly eat goldfish although I do not use feeders. My fish ate frozen Mysis and sinking pellets. I kept mine in a group of 5 and they got along well.

Corybreed,

What size of tank did you use? What would be the smallest feasible? If I mix the 4-line Pimodella with the P. Ornatus would that create problems?

My plan is to include 3 Hoplosternums (If I can find them), 1- PLECO, 3-Pimodella (TBD), and Some Angelfish. It seems like I would be loading up pretty quickly and wanted to make sure what the Pimodellas would eat generally. I plan to get this set up next January or so. But I want to do proper research and do this properly instead of "by the seat of my pants"

I was thinking of putting some cories or Portholes (Dianemes Longibarbis) in the aquarium instead of the Hoplos and wanted to make sure that they wouldn't be lunch. Nothing worse then sending them out to be feeder fish! Thats what my wife's GUPPIES ARE FOR..... :P

So unfortunately, I cannot include any otocincluses (Spelling?) the best little algae eaters ever!

Thanks for your help and patience (all these questions!)

Scott,
If you are going to keep a few P. ornatus I think you wil need a 75 gallon tank. I used a 55 gallon tank but I feel a 75g would be better especially if you are going to add the 4 lines and the hoplosternum or porthole cats. As far as Corys I would not be shocked to here the 12 inch ornatus tried to swalllow one. The P ornatus are very active and probably would disturb the Angelfish.

I have kept 4-lined pims together and whiule they did not get into any fights, they did not seem particularly sociable either.
They pretty much kept to themselves, although they would share the same shelter sometimes.
