What am I?

Post by Judazzz »

Hello all,
I bought this new pleco today, but I have no clue what it is (and neither did the store I bought it from...)
I paid 20 euro's for it, and at first glance that price seems fine with me, as it doesn't look like a common species, but I have no clue what exact species it could be.

So suggestions are welcome!

Here's a few pictures of him (he's still acclimatizing, so this is the best I could get so far):

Don't mind the Raph, please

Thanks in advance 8)

My webhost was down for quite some time last night (must have been that damn Sasser virus... ), so the pictures weren't available for a long period of time...

If anyone has an idea what species this could be, please let me know - in the meantime, I'll try to get some better pics of him.

Hi!

Does it have yellow or orange seams on the dorsal and caudal?

My guess right now would be L20 from Xingu as L354 is highly unlikely (Iriri)
cheers

This one doesn't have orange seams (yet), but at the lfs they kept an almost identical pleco in another tank: that one indeed had yellow-orange seams on caudal and dorsal fins.

The lfs employee couldn't tell me anything about it's collection point, so pics are all we have to figure out this lovely critter's identity.

Thanks for your reply :)

*edit*
Here are some updated pictures - still by no means perfect, but it's as good as it gets atm.

Hi!

Flipping through the DATZ LNumbers edition theres a number of plecos with this kind of patterning. Some have seams and some dont from what i can tell
w/o seams are L20 Oligancistrus from Xingu, L354 Oligancistrus from Iriri (never gets exported)

w seams L106/122 Gyanancistrus from Venezuela, L259 Pseudancistrus from Tapajos (has orange seams and fine spots on the head), L364 Baryancistrus from Jamanxim (looks like bigger fish have no seams), L384 Baryancistrus from Trombetas

this is all i can offer as ive never seen any of these fish in real life. If i were you id also get the other fish at the lfs if its 20 money
cheers

Thanks a lot, people :)

I'll check if the one with seams is still for sale at the LFS - they'd sure make a lovely couple!

That would be a very good idea given that in my colonies, the fish that I believe to be males have a much bolder and more distinct orange band on the fins. It certainly looks like sexual dimorphism to me.

Maybe you'll luck out and have a pair.

Well, I bought the other one as well (pics hopefully later - he's hiding too: nice species... ), so it's time to search the attic for my old Barry White records, I guess... lol

How do these fish reproduce, if possible at all? What do they need? Caves? Plastic tubes? Flower pot? A piece of drift wood under which they can build a nest?
Any pointers?
