Hey everyone, several questions....

Post by Whiskas »

Hey everyone, newbie to the site, looking to stockpile some good info on all sorts of cats.. I was referred here from the cichlid forum website. So heeeeeere we go, Currently have 2 55 gallon tanks. One has been running for 4+ plus months, was basically my introduction to this hobby, and things went sooo well and I fell in love with the fish and the hobby in general, so now I have all sorts of plans for up to 5 more tanks as I have a decent sized home with plenty of room for these min eco systems that add good decor and attractiveness to any home. I have decided to fishless cycle my second 55 gallon at least for the time being, as I am still observing my first tank and what exactly is going on in there. I did however overstock my first tank as I was/am going to split some of them into the second tank.... Anyways, blah blah blah and so on, I am here about catfish.
Currently I have 3 inside my 55 gallon and after the most recent addition it inspired me to collect more info and research them alot more as I am now quite fond of all of them and want to make sure they prosper very well in my tank. The cats I am keeping now are: 1 common pleco, 1 synodontis lace cat, and the new addition is a striped raphael cat, which for some reason is considerably larger than the other two cats. (please forgive the use of common names as I am new here and will soon be frequent with the scientific names)

After observing these fish for several months I have developed several opinions and have generated some questions to help me along in caring for them.

I have no idea of the origins of any of these cats, I think one is for sure from south america after searching this site for a few minutes so if anyone can chime in on that issue I can direct further questions into the right category. Id like to know if these three will mix well together, if they will crossbreed(which isnt what I am aiming for). When I just had the common and the lace cat they shared one common hiding spot and I could barely view them ever, but i did notice that they would "play," with each other or get into scuffles with each other while maintaining that certain spot. When I dropped the striped raphael in I reaaranged some scenery including the hiding spot and the two have since separated the striped raphael now holds that spot to himself, while the common pleco is now out and about most of the day attaching himself to the glass. This has made me fairly happy along with bringing me some serious concerns. Since he started moving all about he is more prone to abuse at the hands of my tank baddie M. Chipokae. I have obsevered several beatings  and can only imagine what happens when I am not looking. However the pleco is still hanging in there and doesnt appear to be damaged.. My other concern is this poor guys eating habits. He jumped in the tank with the first batch of fish 4 months ago, at the time he was much bigger than the cichlids I put him in there with........... Well now those same cichlids are 3 times his size..... I am seriously afraid of this guy starving to death. I do everything I can to get this guy food. After lights out I drop the wafers right near his spot he smells them as do the other cats but this particualr one will run and hide even at night, when he sees other fish, and since the cichlids devour anything in the tank most of the wafers never hit bottom before the fish intercept them and easily scare the pleco away.... Does anyone on this site have an extraordinary way to feed these fish???

As far as some other questions..... I will have two 55 gallons with approx. 15 cichlids each, I believe these two tanks can hold up to 20 fish without overloading the bioload if I have enough filtration. So for the other 5 I would like to place catfish. Is doing this okay?? Should I be species specific( all striped raphael in one tank, all lace cats in another, etc.) Will doing this promote more activity during daytime hours since the numbers are increased?? Will they feel more comfortable??
Do cats school in any way?? How exactly do these cats mate and reproduce????

These are just a few questions I have and hope noone is upset that I wrote such a looong post, I will do some more research here, and take your advice as given, thanks to everyone for reading and/or responding and to the administrators/moderators I just want to say this is defintely one awesome site, thanks for all the hard work!!!!

The lace cat is from Africa, and the other two from South America.
if they will crossbreed
Never.
I have obsevered several beatings
This means it's time to remove the pleco from that tank.

yup yup, Thanks for the quick info, Will any cats crossbreed??? If they are from similar places in similar parts of the world?? Thank God i have a quarantine tank for that is building up algae, its time to move the common pleco, thanks again :) :)

Where on earth do most of you get your plecos???? Any good links to sites that sell/ship them??
No doubt everything I currently have is very common and readily available, its extremely hard to find any good fish in general around here and I regularly drive over an hour just to look at a decent variety of cichlids, sometimes I purchase. But I still cannot find anyone within driving range that would carry the so many various beautiful creatures found in the many pages of this site.........
