Not sure which one I have. I'm pretty sure it's a trilineatus, but it seems that all websites have different info and mixed pictures of the two species.
Also, if you can determine a sex I'd appreciate it too.
Naw, I don't think it could be an agassizii or delphax. Neither of those species have marks on their heads, or the large black spot in the dorsal fin..
One of the things to remember when trying to identify a fish is, there are always variations in colour patterns within a population, which is more evident with the mottled and spotted species. Also there is a great range of variation in colour pattern within the life span of an individual specimen, so with some species until the fish is at least 4 years old, I would not guarantee an accurate identification.
The only other species that comes close to your fish is C74, which is similarly marked and would fit between C. agassizii and C. delphax.
To my knowledge the black spot on the dorsal fin represent nothing special, just a pigmentation...
example... i have 4 c.schwartzi, and 2 of them have black spot, other two don't!
There certainly can be a difference in dorsal markings in specimans of delphax but my rule of thumb when identifying this cory is that the edges of each scute seem to have either a spot or lines and the head tends to have a dip in it, above the eyes
C. delphax
Corydoras species C74
C. agassizii (Young male.
If you look at the three pictures there is one main feature that separates C. delphax from the other two and that is the baring in the caudal fin. C. delphax has 8 or 10 indistinct bars, where as the other two only have 5 or six.
The head shape of C. delfax is also distinct with its prominent bump just in front of the dorsal fin.
Just to take C. trilineatus and C.julii out of the discussion al together, here are pictures of both.
C. trilineatus
C. julii
Ok thanks so much Ian. It definately looks like he's an agassizii now. I don't think it can be a c74, because the dots on the side of my fish are too small and defined, more like the picture of the delphax.
He definately doesn't have the bump on his head like c74 though.
